Planting a sapling into Bottle

in homesteading •  6 years ago  (edited)
So both my nieces visited me last week and I tried to teach them something new every morning after their bath in our little home pool. While having a chit-chat with the older one who is 8, she just said that they don't have any plants at their home which I obviously already knew, but then I decided to teach her how to plant a sapling using stuff that is already available in our homes. I taught it to her just so that she knows it is possible to plant a sapling without having to ask her mama for much.

This is something we did :

Stuff that we need - easily available in our homes - Zero cost

--A plastic bottle.
--A knife to cut plastic bottle.
--A fork to do holes in bottom of plastic bottle so that the little plant can have some air circulation.
--A utensil to put soil in bottle.
--Few stones to put in bottom of plastic bottle as the holes.
--A plant from which you can take your little bud.

Step 1 - Cut the bottle - Make your pot

I cut the bottle in two halves thinking it would be easy one and the only way it makes sense. But my niece suggested that we should cut a rectangle on bottle surface, it would look pretty when hanged, she watched that in television somewhere. Se made faces on the bottle shape that I cutout first so I was left with no option but to take another bottle and do her way. Also because my purpose was to teach her and make her happy so she won here.

My way - her way (together) :
The winning way (hers):

Step 2 - Bring the soil and the sapling into picture

Then we took proportionate amount of soil into our bottle and a little sapling out of a plant with its roots.

Then we did two holes in bottom of our bottle using the knife. Then we put some stones over the holes so that the soil does not get out of it. Then we put some more soil and set the baby plant properly. Then we watered it.

And we are done!

Then I hanged the plant with a ribbon just to that it looks the way my niece wanted - A hanging plant. Also it looked cool and since bottle is round, I feel it must have been a comfortable setup for the sapling itself.

Here are my two little sapling students, sitting smiling and learning. The little one who is 3 hardly understood anything but she was asking all the while about what are we doing. The elder one was actively participating and making faces of curiosity and happiness.

What a great idea to get all creative with plants like that. They'll probably have loads of plants at home in a couple of weeks :0)

yeah my niece has already planted one more plant in a bottle with my sister's help :)

Nice to teach children how to grow plants, then care for them @vibesforlife excellent idea re-cycling items.

Little ones soak up knowledge more than you realize next time the 3 year old will be teaching you some tricks.

Yeah re-cycling stuff is good, indeed children do not forget things you teach them. The 8 year old once saw me coloring some of my hair golden when she was three. Now she tells me everytime she meets me - i know how you did that by putting my lunch box foil paper on your hair. I laugh so hardly whenever she says it but this episode surprised me.

Pure awesomeness 👍👍😎💕😍🙏

We do the same thing here in Bangladesh. Also we have the similar plant. Love the beautiful magenta flower of this plant. What do you call it in your native language?

yeah the flower on this one is pretty amazing, paperish textured flowers. We call it BICHU BUTTI. Bichu means spider in hindi.

What is it called in Bangladesh.

What a fun project for them. You must love having your nieces over to have fun with and teach them, especially recycling and homemade things which will teach them to be resourceful too!

Yeah its good time of the year, happens twice only -their summer vacations and winter vacations :)

That is a great idea since we do not have much space here to plant. I hope herbs would thrive in this way of planting. I have had not much luck in growing them so far.

Oh yes planting herbs in bottle and arranging them vertically on a rack or something similar, works. I have seen it in some local small cafe, looks attractive too.

What a great way to recycle a bottle! Awesome stuff. I recently (like, last week recently) did something very similar with a leftover bucket: https://steemit.com/gardening/@wwwiebe/when-life-gives-you-cat-litter

I like what you've done!

Ohh with a bucket also sounds interesting, let me check yours. :)

Great idea, perfect for starter plants @vibesforlife 👍👍

Very clever idea! What a wonderful learning experience for the girls!

Yeah they loved the idea :)thankyou for stopping by :)

Caring for a plant is a good experience for a child!)

Yes teaches them in a ways we might not know.

The sheer innocence of being young and curious...sometimes, I get those moments when I reminisce on my own childhood. As a child I was very precocious and difficult to handle- that's not from me- that came from my mom! hahahahaha

hahahaha your blogs make me feel that you must been a calm kid but Ok I will go with what your mom says :P

hahaha well, half of the time that I am writing my posts, its either I am too sleepy, tired, fell asleep then woke up again thing. Honestly, I am busy right now but, writing is my passion so here I am.

Hehehe good to know, so much energy to write even when feeling sleepy :P
