FINALLY! A Little Greenhouse Therapy.

in homesteading •  7 years ago

I finally dug my way into the greenhouse and played with dirt today. There's nothing quite like that smell of soil, manure and earthiness to make a person feel hopeful that spring will soon be here! It's still very winterish around here.

I filled up a bunch of trays and brought them to the house to get seedling started! Those plastic trays have moved with me around the country and others were here when we bought our homestead. I know plastics are terrible but they've really been handy. I expect we'll get many, many more years out of them.

While I was sifting the soil and getting the seedling trays filled I decided that we should plant some spinach and kale. It's 20c in the greenhouse today (twenty degrees warmer than it is outside).

At night it's going to be around -9 so I've swaddled the planted area with plastic and fabric row cover to keep it from freezing.

My husband was really sweet and carried out a few 5 gallon pails of water so we could moisten the soil for the spinach and kale. We have all the water to the greenhouse shut off until the temps are above 0 at night. I suggested he wear snowshoes but he said "no thanks" you take them. He handled the falling through knee deep snow while carrying 5 gallon pails quite gracefully. I would have been wet.

The chickens seemed to know I was nearby. I could hear them hollering "let us out of here!!" I opened the door but none of them were brave enough to come outside (lol).

I am so happy that it's finally time to start the seedlings and get ready to grow food! I'll stick some buckets of snow in the greenhouse in the morning and see if I can get that to melt over the day. It'll save us hauling water over the snowy terrain.

Our snow is almost melted today but we are expecting 11 more inches this weekend. I agree the greenhouse is like a different world and always seem to cheer me up too. I worked out in ours today. I have a huge list of to dos.... I am ready for Spring but I do love the snow. I am glad you got to get out in yours today. It is definitely good for the soul.

Wow you still have a load of snow around!! Brrrrrr is all I can say! Spring can't be far away now surely.. Here in NZ we have gone from stifling hot a couple of weeks ago to quite cool now - winter is coming lol

We've had a long winter this year. At least I have the greenhouse to work in. It's like a little world of it's own! I love how we get to take turns enjoying and sharing the seasons although I would much rather a NZ winter!!

Haha wet and cold wind - it wears you down but it's bearable as long as you have a nice warm fire to sit by :)

I do love a cosy fire :)

Good for you! I just recently planted some seedlings of my own. If I could wish the snow away it would have been gone last week. Woo-hoo spring time in the North.

We don't usually complain but this year we are going a bit stir crazy! It's been such a long winter. Spring will be here soon enough though!

Cool you made it out to the greenhouse and got seeds in the ground. The snow here has nearly completely melted. Next week they are saying 50'sF most of the week. I can't wait! I will be working on getting the fence around the garden. No point planting without it.

That's great news! Its so fun to see everyone's gardens come to life. I am waiting for the day to warm up a bit and I'll go out and do some organizing. It's just nice to be outside.

We have a whole bunch of lady bugs in the house right now...there's one slowly moving across my keyboard as I type. I feel so bad for them because they've woken up too soon :(

Our ladybugs are active, more or less, all winter. But we have seen more of them lately. Mostly I find them in my bed, and if you upset them, peeewwwweeyy! These Asian variety stink!

I had no idea that some of them stink. Interesting! No idea what variety we have but I've certainly upset them so I guess they aren't a stinky type :)
