Whitetail Deer Seen From Our Front Porch - Wizstead Post #17

in homesteading •  7 years ago

There were 5 total deer running around playing in the pasture west of our house.

These are taken off our front porch with a droid smartphone at 4 times magnification.

Trixie barking at them did not scare them off.

I would imagine there's a "Oh, cool," factor with these kinds of sightings so close your house mixed with, "Oh, you better stay out of my garden," thoughts, too.

I know some people who have a few acres that butt up against woods and every year the deer come down to nibble at their greens. They're not the type who would try to poison or shoot the deer (probably both are against the law here, anyway), so they've had to put fencing and netting over their garden to protect from both the deer, and other land based creatures, along with the birds. Not sure how effective any of that is against bugs, but they probably have those, too.

Just a part of country living I suppose. My guess is you much rather have the wild animals around so you can see them and appreciate nature than you would want to be cooped up with thousands of people per square mile, or you wouldn't be homesteadin'. Wild guess I know, but that's how I roll. :)

I did see deer tracks in the dirt after bulldozing the old house and scrub brush out. I imagine they were used to bedding here sometimes. But, I haven't seen deer tracks around the house or in the garden yet since getting moved here.

  • I stepped out back 20 or 30 years ago when living in the old house and there was a HUGE buck with his head back eating an apple from the dwarf tree that we had got Grandpa who planted it back there. Too bad that was before smartphones or I would've got a nice pic of him... I stepped back inside and watched him for quite awhile before he wandered off.
    • I have had some rabbits eat the leaves off my pepper plants this year. Lil buggers! haha
      • I am a bit of a loner. If the wife and I could bulldoze out the road and survive here, I would be fine with that. Well, maybe leave a way for the kids and grandkids and mom to come visit. haha and a few other friends and cousins hmm I guess I better cancel the bulldozer idea.

I hear you on the loner part. There's times I'd just as soon no one be around for at least a day or two. Then, though, I get lonely and need to see someone. :)

Yeah, so if it's not the deer, it's the rabbits, or the squirrels, or the raccoons or the gophers or some other wild creature. We have neighbor cats and the wild flocks of birds to contend with. They generally take out the pie cherries, the blueberries and some of the strawberry crop, though not as much of those. Not sure why that is. The acidity in strawberries maybe?

We haven't really done much about it, except I'll pick up a rock and fling it at the fence to scare them off. Then, immediately regret doing it because the rock came way too close to sailing into someone's yard and thus busting something on impact.

I keep thinking I need to put something up, but I'm not sure what. Someone gave me an idea of something (you?), but I can't remember now what it was. :)
