The book of Psalms, although his work is attributed to King David who was a talented musician, the book is not a homogeneous book, it is very likely that many songs or sections were added until its final writing, that is why numerous songs can be assigned to different time periods during Israel's history.
Psalm 85 is generally interpreted in the Bible as a prayer for God's mercy, after the sons of Jacob returned from the captivity in Babylon: "You, LORD, showed favor to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob" Psalm 85:1.
The Persians who had conquered the Middle East did not practice slavery, and under the regency of Cyrus the Great, the king of kings, much of the Jewish community had begun to return to the holy land. It is thus that the Psalmist asks for the restoration of his community in the promised land: "Restore us again, God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us" Psalm 85:4.
It is important to understand that in this context, God is the hope of the people of Israel, God is faithful and keeps all his promises; because God is wise and perfect, God loves with kindness those who fear him, this is what the psalmist wants to emphasize in the face of the hopelessness and the destruction that the Babylonian empire had caused to the Israelites: "Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land" Psalm 85:9.
The Psalm ends with the assurance that blessedness and full happiness are for those who follow the commandments of God with faithfulness and true spiritual fear (devotion):
"Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.
The LORD will indeed give what is good,
and our land will yield its harvest.
Righteousness goes before him
and prepares the way for his steps" Psalm 85:10-13.
