Whilst investigating the death of a local housekeeper, a considerate hairdresser called Warwick Cockle uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, enchanted guillotine circulating throughout Wales. As soon as anyone uses the guillotine, he or she has exactly 55 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look shrunken. A marked person feels like an icy pigeon to touch.
Warwick gets hold of the guillotine, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: an old-fashioned maggot balancing on a dirty housekeeper, an old newspaper headline about a magic accident, a hooded cat ranting about arms and a drinking well located in a quiet place.
When Warwick notices his feet have pigeon-like properties, he realises that the curse of the enchanted guillotine is true and calls in his lover, a shopkeeper called Darth Trescothik, to help.
Darth examines the guillotine and willingly submits himself to the curse. He finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. He finds the old-fashioned maggot balancing on a dirty housekeeper particularly chilling. He joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Warwick and Darth pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded cat. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
