In the Depths of the Lake
The town of Dunwich is infamous for hosting supernatural events. Hidden deep within the forest lies a lake that everyone speaks of with fear: Umbral Lake.
One summer day, a young archaeologist, Dr. William Harding, arrived in Dunwich. There were rumors that the depths of the lake concealed the remnants of an ancient civilization. William was determined to uncover these relics.
The vegetation around the lake was oddly blackened and withered. The surface of the lake was always shrouded in mist, and an eerie, ominous murmur rose from the depths. The locals believed the lake was cursed and refused to go near it.
One night, William approached the lake's edge with a lantern in hand. When he threw a stone into the water, the ripples quickly disappeared, and the silence returned, heavier than before. Summoning his courage, he dove into the lake.
The water was unusually cold, and as he descended, visibility became almost nil. William noticed a strange structure in the depths. An ancient, moss-covered temple lay sleeping at the bottom of the lake. Its walls bore bizarre symbols and carvings, unlike any language William had ever seen.
Upon entering the temple, air bubbles rose and vanished, and total darkness enveloped him. Suddenly, he noticed shadows moving in the water. These shadows belonged to humanoid but grotesque creatures. Terrified, William tried to retreat, but it was too late. One of the creatures grabbed him and pulled him closer.
Before losing consciousness, the last thing he remembered was a chilling, incomprehensible whisper echoing in his ears: "These lands are ours. Those who come here stay with us forever."
Days later, the townsfolk searched for William but found no trace of him. The lake kept its secret. However, those who stood by the lake at night claimed to hear strange whispers rising from the depths. Those whispers seemed to call out the soul of William, trapped in the lake.
As years passed, Umbral Lake remained a silent and dark threat, waiting for more victims. And in the depths of the lake, the temple that William had discovered continued to guard its ancient and malevolent secrets.
