Monsters TV Show Complete Series DVD Release Review - 80s Television Series

Some great childhood memories that I have can be traced back to Saturday nights, staying up late to watch the Tales From the Darkside and Monsters tv shows that came on around 11pm on the west coast. The amazing intros, the creepy stories, and the popcorn I'd be eating gave me something to really look forward to. What made the show great? Even though the show had some low budget telltale signs (single location, single monster, few characters), it conveyed a creepiness and scary looking monster, especially for the time. The awesome intro and synth score really set the tone for what you were about to see.

Giving some cursory history on the origin of the show, the movie Creepshow was created as an homage to the EC comics of the 1950s. The movie was a sleeper hit and plans for a tv show were considered. Since there was a rights issue with using the Creepshow name on a TV show, the name Tales From the Darkside was chosen. Tales From the Darkside was a success (a movie ended up being made as well) and the Monsters tv series ended up being created the same year that Tales From the Darkside ended.

WorldVision Home Video released a set of VHS tapes that contained a measly 2 episodes per tape, but that was all that was officially released. Most people had to resort to finding pre-recorded bootlegs of the show, and even when the Chiller network and SyFy started broadcasting them, there was no updated home video release. Then in 2014, the show finally got an official DVD release that we'd all been waiting for. I immediately picked it up that year, after not having seen the show for years, and even though parts of it definitely seem dated, the show doesn't hold up too bad at all.
