Movie Story
The beginning of the film is a documentary-style montage from television shows from the time of “Dawn of the Dead,” when rebel zombies took over the entire world. In "present day", the time the film takes place, humanity maintains several fortified cities, including Pittsburgh. It is reliably protected from the dead by high-voltage fences, walls, barricades, military patrols and, most importantly, a river - zombies do not know how to cross water barriers. Much of the city is a poverty-stricken slum, but the central skyscraper, Fiddler's Green, where the elite live, maintains the highest standard of living. The actual owner of the city is the manager of Fiddler's Green, Paul Kaufman.
Forays are periodically made outside of Pittsburgh to pick up food and medicine remaining in an abandoned part of the city and neighboring settlements. These expeditions, carried out not by the military, but by volunteers with nothing to lose, use a specially designed huge armored vehicle , the Dead Reckoning. The "Patrol" is armed with rockets, machine guns and a special installation for launching fireworks - the latter fascinate the zombies, distracting them from people.
The designer of the “Dead Patrol” and the permanent head of expeditions, Riley Danbo, plans to leave his occupation and flee north to Canada. He should be accompanied only by his devoted friend and comrade Charlie, mentally retarded and disfigured by a terrible burn, but nevertheless an excellent shooter. Meanwhile, his deputy Cholo Demora, to whom Riley is going to hand over the reins of the volunteer team, is also going to “give up” on sorties. Cholo secretly worked for Kaufman for a long time, eliminating undesirable townspeople and transporting their bodies outside the city under the guise of garbage; Now he expects Kaufman to reward him with an apartment in Fiddler's Green, which will include Cholo among the ranks of the city's elite.
Having lost one of the team members in Cholo's visit to an abandoned liquor store, Riley ends the expedition and returns to the city. “Big Daddy” , a former gas station worker and a very unusual zombie, many times superior in intelligence to his relatives, capable of compassion for them and almost deliberately hating people (which continues the idea with the “training” zombie Bob from “Day of the Dead ” ) , heads after them, focusing on the lights of Fiddler's Green; "Daddy" is followed by a large crowd of zombies.
In the city, Riley visits the leader of the poor, Mulligan, his old friend, now leading propaganda against Kaufman. After giving Mulligan's son the medicine he needs, Riley heads to the auto repair shop and discovers that his own car, which he was preparing to leave for Canada, has disappeared. He suspects the local mafia tycoon, a dwarf Chihuahua, who sold him the car, and together with Charlie goes to his club. The Chihuahua club hosts something like gladiatorial fights with the participation of zombies, to whom a living girl named Slack is thrown into the arena as bait. Riley and Charlie save her; in the ensuing shootout and general panic, Charlie kills a Chihuahua trying to escape. The police arrest all three - Charlie, Riley and the wounded Slack. In prison they see Mulligan arrested; Slack was thrown into the arena among the zombies on the orders of Mr. Kaufman, as she worked for Mulligan.
Cholo, having delivered champagne and cigars obtained during the expedition to Mr. Kaufman, demands an apartment in Fiddler's Green, otherwise Cholo will tell everyone about Kaufman's dirty deeds. Kaufman orders the guard to take Cholo out - Kaufman no longer needs his services. On the stairs, Cholo beats up the guard and runs away. Meanwhile, the army of the dead, led by “Big Daddy,” successfully overcomes numerous barricades on the approaches to the city. The soldiers guarding the barricades are taken by surprise; Taking advantage of the situation, Cholo and the volunteer team leave on the Dead Patrol. Having driven away from the city, Cholo puts forward his new demands to Kaufman over the radio - five million dollars, otherwise he will shoot the city from the Patrol rocket launcher. One of Cholo's volunteers, Mouse, must meet the boat with the money.
Kaufman releases Cholo's direct superior, Riley, from prison and asks him to deal with the rebellious volunteer. Riley, along with Charlie, Slack and three soldiers detached by Kaufman - Manolete, Motown and Pillsbury (a huge Samoan ) go out of town, monitoring the movements of the Patrol through Riley's PDA. They discover that zombies have broken through the barricades, killing all the soldiers, and now only a river separates the army of the dead from the city. An unwary Manolete is bitten by a zombie, and Slack kills the infected soldier. Waiting for Kaufman's messengers by the river to no avail, Mouse is killed by zombie clowns.
Riley explains his position to his companions: he does not believe Kaufman and does not intend to return to the city with the Dead Patrol, therefore, having eliminated the threat to the city, Riley is going to leave with the Patrol to the north. Private Motown intends to arrest him, but her colleague Pillsbury, who is more than satisfied with Riley's plan, stuns Motown and leaves him in the car. Riley and Charlie go to meet the Patrol. Cholo takes them both on board, but does not abandon his intention to launch a missile strike on the city.
Riley, now captured by Cholo, disables the missile launcher via his PDA. By this moment, Slack and Pillsbury are approaching the Patrol, on the one hand, and the awakened Motown, on the other. Although Motown dies at the hands and teeth of zombies, Cholo is wounded in a short shootout, and Riley and Charlie capture the Patrol. Having seen a fire in the city, the Patrol, under the command of Riley, goes to Pittsburgh to the rescue. They release Cholo and his friend Woody, who intend to head west to another city in the same car that Riley arrived in. However, Cholo turns out to be bitten by the “living dead”, and he, realizing that he will soon also turn into a zombie, changes his plans, going to Pittsburgh to take revenge on Kaufman.
At this time, zombies led by Big Daddy cross the river along the bottom and invade the city, causing panic in the slums - people who did not expect their appearance are unable to provide any resistance to the zombie horde; Moreover, they found themselves trapped - due to all the barricades and electrified fences erected against the zombies, the city turns out to be impossible to leave. People flock in panic to an electrified fence that cannot be turned off. Even fireworks launched by the “Dead Patrol” on the road no longer stop the attacking zombies. Led by Big Daddy, some of the most “trained” zombies, armed with improvised tools, set out to storm Fiddlers Green. Kaufman himself, amid the zombie carnage at Fiddler's Green, tries to escape with two bags of money; he is pursued by Big Daddy, and soon by Cholo, who appears in the form of a zombie. Both Kaufman and the dead Cholo are killed in the explosion caused by Daddy.
The Dead Patrol team successfully lowers the drawbridge leading into the city , but discovers that all the people gathered at the electrified fence have been killed by the dead. They still shoot both the fence and the zombies with a rocket launcher; the people who survived in the slums, led by Mulligan, who had left the prison, climb over the remains of the fence. Some of them leave the city, and some - with Mulligan at their head - return to the city, deciding to create a new society, more just than Kaufman’s unjust system. The “wiser” zombies also leave the city on their own way, having fully satisfied their thirst for revenge on Fiddler’s Green. Riley forbids the Dead Patrol team to shoot them, and the armored car leaves for the free north , releasing fireworks that have become unnecessary into the skies.
