Michelin-starred restaurants in European hotels

When traveling, sometimes you just don’t want to leave your hotel in search of a good meal in an unfamiliar city. Maybe you’ve just arrived at your destination, or perhaps you’ve been on the road for a while and need a respite from a busy day of exploring. Whatever the reason, if you happen to be staying at a hotel that has a Michelin-starred restaurant onsite, your problems are solved with a guarantee of upscale, delicious cuisine just an elevator ride away from your bed.

There are literally hundreds of Michelin-starred restaurants to choose from across Europe, and many of these are found at high-end hotels with four or five-star ratings. These restaurants usually offer expert cooking by a local chef who utilizes the traditional flavors of his or her homeland, combined with modern techniques and influences. Having a Michelin-starred restaurant is also an important selling point for any hotel.

“Having a Michelin-starred restaurant… is a huge attraction for international gourmands and local residents alike,” says Richard Cooke, general manager at Edinburgh’s The Balmoral Hotel. “As our Number One restaurant is one of only 13 restaurants in Scotland to have a Michelin star, and one of only four in Edinburgh, it attracts guests from all over the world, as well as many local visitors who come to experience exceptional cuisine in Edinburgh’s most iconic hotel.”

In an oversaturated market with countless choices of accommodation, having a Michelin-starred restaurant can be a deciding factor for some guests, especially those with gustatory inclinations.

“It's really important in terms of visibility," says Giovanni Cilento, maitre d’hotel at Da Vittorio in St. Moritz, Switzerland. "Everyone, thanks to the media, knows what a Michelin star restaurant is. Drinking well and eating well are a very fashionable must, and all the guests today are really interested in new culinary trends. The Michelin Guide [is] the most effective way [to attract foodies].”
