Joist Rim board fascia

in house •  7 years ago

Working on my upstairs Loft an important decision needed to be made regarding the rim joist fascia material. It currently had a Laminate OSB rim joist which is great for keeping the floor system rigid and straight over time. With that being said the unfinished OSB look is not the best! There are too many options to list all of them a person could chose to improve the look of a loft fascia, and what was settled on for this job was 3/4" thick by 6" wide Pine tongue and groove.

Hitachi 15 gauge nailer was used to nail right below the tongue on each pre made tongue and grove board.

In my situation I started with the inside corner as this was the most logical as it needed to be a good tight joint. This woodwork is at the proper height to catch my eye as I walk into the living room. Most people would not notice a minor gap here but I would and for the next 50 years this would drive me insane! you can see by the picture below I worked my way from the inside corner in each way. If you notice where my hand is that is an outside corner. I made sure to you use wood glue in both the inside and outside corners as over time they will open up as the wood expands and contracts.

I was careful to stagger the joints only for aesthetic reasons. Post installation I did not fill any of the nail holes as I have NEVER used of seen a wood filer that looked better then a nail head! It was all finished with polyurethane. Overall it was a huge improvement to the OSB and took around 6 hours to complete at night after my DAY job. Hopefully you enjoyed this post and it was informative. please leave any questions comments or concerns or any other ideas you guys might have for me to complete. I am constantly building something and I would love to share with this awesome community!
