Ever since we changed landlords, the front gate downstairs has never been opened again. The previous female landlord would even invite two security guards to sit downstairs and drink tea while watching the entrance. Sometimes, she would sit on a folding chair on the first floor and greet tenants as they came and went, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
But now, there isn't a single security guard watching downstairs. The registration area at the front desk was closed off with an iron gate, and delivery packages are strewn all over the floor without anyone attending to them.
It's been so long, but we still haven't run into the new landlords downstairs.
On the evening of March 7th, the mother cat suddenly gave birth at home, but neither of us had any experience in delivering kittens. We were at a loss when my boyfriend discovered the situation first. We were lying in bed, each looking at our phones. We turned off all the lights in the house to save on electricity, leaving only a small desk lamp on, which emitted a warm yellow light that was very dim, illuminating only a tiny area near the bed and the desk.
Suddenly, my boyfriend smelled a bloody smell and looked under the bed. The mother cat was eating the body of a newborn kitten that was only half out of her body and had not yet been fully delivered. The mother cat was making sounds, which were very frightening.
"Oh my god! She's eating it!" My boyfriend exclaimed, jumping off the bed and picking up the dead kitten that the mother cat was eating. Upon closer inspection, the kitten's head had already been severed, and it hung down lifelessly, without breathing and without opening its eyes. Its whole body was covered in sticky blood, and it had no fur. Holding the kitten's body, my boyfriend became angry and said fiercely, "It's dead! Why did you eat it?"
Then he patted the mother cat's head and gently stroked the kitten's body with his finger. The kitten remained motionless, and had already lost all signs of life. It couldn't be saved.
My boyfriend reluctantly threw the kitten into the trash bin. I comforted him, "She can still give birth to more kittens. Let's make sure she doesn't eat them again." The pregnant mother cat had a big belly that sagged down to the ground, indicating that she was carrying more than one baby. My boyfriend was now keeping a close watch on the mother cat, waiting for the birth of the second kitten. After waiting for half an hour, my boyfriend got up to freshen up, leaving me in bed browsing through Weibo. I didn't notice that he had left until he came back shouting, "No way! She ate it again?"
The mother cat had eaten half of the newly born kitten, leaving only its lower body. My boyfriend, feeling heartbroken and angry, took the kitten from the mother cat's mouth and threw it back into the trash bin. "What can we do? It's the second one!" he exclaimed.
I was at a loss for words and didn't know what to do. I comforted him and told him to wait for the birth of the third kitten, and to take it away as soon as it was born to prevent the mother cat from eating it again.
As time passed, it was soon midnight. I was getting sleepy, and my migraine was getting worse, so I put down my phone and lay down. Meanwhile, my boyfriend was still sitting on the floor watching over the mother cat. The ground was covered in bloodstains and blood clots.
"Come on, let's go to sleep. We have to wake up early tomorrow," I urged him, hoping he would turn off the lights and go to bed with me.
"I can't. She still has to give birth," he replied.
Helpless, I closed my eyes tightly, turned over, and prayed that I would fall asleep quickly.
"She gave birth again and ate it again!" my boyfriend shouted, waking me up from my daze. "Quick, look, she ate it again!"
Seeing that I had woken up, my boyfriend held up a bloody, mutilated corpse of a kitten in his hands and presented it to me. The stench of blood was overwhelming, and I pushed his hand away, saying, "Stay away, I'm afraid of blood."
He sadly threw the kitten into the trash bin and said, "She eats while she's giving birth, turning her head and eating. I can't stop her."
I replied, "There's nothing we can do."
I myself don't like this black cat very much because she's not lively and very introverted. She sleeps on our bed all day long. If you throw her off, she'll jump back up. If you try to hold her, she'll struggle and run away. She's not affectionate with people at all, and her face always gives a creepy feeling. She's not cute at all and doesn't show any expressions. Anyway, she doesn't appeal to me in any way.
I don't know why I thought short-legged cats were rare and bought her at a cat cafe in my hometown, where the price was relatively cheap.
We started to dislike her because she kept pooping on the bed during that period, even though we had prepared a litter box for her. When she was at home, she was fine, so maybe it was because she was in a new environment. We didn't blame her too much, but it was troublesome to wash the sheets and change the bed cover every day. We thought she would adapt slowly, but she still pooped on the bed every day. My boyfriend was also patiently cleaning up after her, but he still harbored some resentment towards her, and she never changed her bad habit.
At midnight, the mother cat gave birth to two more kittens, but she ate them both. We couldn't stop her and she even killed them before they were fully born, ending their lives. In total, she gave birth to five kittens and ate all of them.
After a night of struggling, my boyfriend was already on the verge of collapse. It was already past 3 a.m. when he finally lay down. The whole room smelled of putrefaction and death. I had to ask him to turn on the air conditioner so that he could sleep.
For this devilish behavior, we hated that mother cat to the bone. In the following days, we couldn't look at her with a friendly face and felt like we were facing a murderer.
My boyfriend talked to the pet store owner about what happened. The owner said that this situation is very abnormal because this was the mother cat's second litter. During her first delivery, she was fine and did not exhibit any cannibalistic behavior. She gave birth to three kittens on the floor, and the next day the owner found that one had died from the cold, but the mother cat did not eat any of her babies.
This strange behavior was really creepy, and we even suspected that something was wrong with her and that she had turned into such a heartless and cruel mother.
