Snake Plant Flowers!

in houseplants •  6 years ago

This is a teeny short post, but I just had to show off how my blooming snake plant is doing. I've never seen it happen before, and apparently it's pretty rare. The internet tells me that a snake plant only blooms once in its life!

This snake plant calved from my bigger snake plant several years ago. The web also said that after the blooms, there will be berries with seeds! I'm going to try to plant those, even though it's supposed to be hard to start them from seed.

Supposedly, moths pollinate them in their native habitat. I wonder if the cloth moths will do it for me, or should I break out a paintbrush? LOL

Have a good day, everyone!

Moth pollinated snake plants!!!

This sounds a bit like a horror story...

LOL! It came ...FROM THE WINDOWSILL!

I was just going to congratulate you on the once in a lifetime bloom...and this comment made me laugh and spit my coffee everywhere. Hahaha! 🤣

How freaking cool!! Hello sweet snake plant flowers!!!! That is awesome possum Phe! I recently got a snake plant from my late Uncle's estate. It is getting to around 100 years old! It has grown a bunch new babies since it arrived. #growingislife

Wow, 100 years old! 😮 You must share a photo with the Steemiverse! 😃

If you want to try pollinating them by hand, you might be able to just use your finger to transfer the pollen around. I have done this with a few of my plants.

Really, your finger? Wow! I had first tried to pollinate my tomatoes with a q tip and it didn't work so I moved on to a paintbrush. :)

Different plants may work better/different than others. Also, it can take a while trying to touch every part to get a complete pollination.

Wow that's amaizing. Never heard of a snake plant. It kinda looks like a verigated mother in laws tongue. But thinner. Mother in laws tongue is a good air cleaner does this plant do the same do you know? 😁

Snake plant is mother in law's tongue; just different names for the same plant. :) I am not good with the Latin cultivar type names, but they're both this plant!

Well now i want ours to flower 😀😀
