How to Spend Your Steem -- Land Diving in Pentecost Island Vanuatu

in how-to •  7 years ago

What the heck is Land Diving and Where’s Vanuatu?

Here we will take a look at some crazy adventures you can go on now that you’re making money on Steemit beyond your wildest dreams.

Oddly I could not find a single photo a non native doing it. Huh.

Vanuatu is a small South Pacific country known as one of the happiest places on earth. It’s clean and strives to be 100% organic. It’s a poor country separated by many islands with Port Vila being the capital city.

On the map it’s way out in the middle of nowhere. Not much going on here accept chilling in the sun and sailing on boats if you’re not in to face first jumping off towers towards the ground.

To be honest you probably wouldn’t like it.

I mean look at it. Do you really want to swim in those waters?

Its crystal clear warm waters. Natural jungles and tropical springs makes Vanuatu a paradise far removed from the rest of the world. I have always dreamed of going and maybe that dream will come true. I kind of want to live there but it’s best I visit before that commitment.

Or stand next to an active volcano?

I know you’re going to hate the thought of dining here watching the sunset.

No, you’re here to go land diving right?

”These men, who live on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, climb a rickety 98-foot-tall (30-meter) tower, tie vines to their ankles and dive to the ground, falling at speeds around 45 mph (72 kph). When a dive goes correctly, the person gets close enough to touch his shoulders or his head to the earth. Unlike bungee cords, the vines aren't elastic, and the jumpers won't bounce back up. A miscalculation in vine length and a diver may smash into the ground headfirst, resulting in serious injury or death. Vines that are too dry or weak may snap. There are no nets, no helmets and no safety equipment of any kind. The ritual is called land diving, or naghol.”

I always thought that the land diving was not open to outsiders to take part in.

I didn't know about that actually. This tour offers it. I did see on Idiot Abroad they offered him to try for the tv show but he declined, respectably. Maybe they allow it sometimes now. It's probably best they don't allow it save men's egos. lol

I remember seeing a TV show about this, what a crazy alt-sport!!!

I saw a TV programme which mentioned this Vanuatu is one of the happiest place on earth.

We must have seen the same show.

haha! great pics, wild stuff! Look at that structure! And the loin cloth..

Seriously, they don't leave much to the imagination.

Land dive something I will never try haha. The pool looks really nice thou, Really really blue!

I think i'll be chilling by the beach or pool.

@solarguy I saw documentary about "land-diving". What a crazy ritual... very interesting story!
If you have a minute please check my new story about Multimedia Fountain Park in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. I'm sure you will like it!
All the best :)

Love it! when i was working on Cruiseships we went to the Vanuatu island a lot, mostly port Villa, very different post, liked it

You've been there on a cruise, several times!!! even as a worker, and i hear cruise jobs are pretty much 24/7, that would be awesome. I'm gonna have to follow you and see if I can catch a story from your cruise life. I considered that job once, justonce, didn;t get... maybe that was a good thing. lol

I would love to help you if you want to try again, i can give you some insight and more info if you want to know if you are up for the task.

Working on it mate! ;)

That's pretty fascinating. Hard core stuff. I'd be poopin' my pants without a real bungie cord.
