How To- Tint Tail Lights using Vinyl Wrap Film

in how •  7 years ago

Here is a guide for all of the DIY'ers looking to tint their lights.

In this video, I show you how to tint taillights using wrap or tint film. This method also works on headlights, signals, reflectors and any other type of light/lens, for this video it was done an an Acura TSX. Using a film is by far the best method when it comes to achieving a consistent finish with a harmless removal down the road.

Materials/Tools:

  1. Vinyl
  2. Heatgun (hairdryers take way too long and don't get hot enough for curvaceous shapes
  3. Squeegee (using a credit card will scratch the finish)
  4. Cleaning alcohol, baby shampoo (or soap), as well as microfiber towels.
  5. Utility knife/exacto

You can purchase film from anywhere online. I also sell various shades of tint, which you can purchase here:

The film used in this video is not yet listed. If you are interested, send me a message via the contact us page on the website.

How to tint your lights:

  1. Clean the surface and crevices of the head/tail light with soap and water, make sure there is no dust, dirt or debris left over. Clean with alcohol after to remove any remaining oil/grease.

  2. Mix 1 drop of baby shampoo, or soap, into a full spray bottle, this is your slip solution. Shake well. Spray this on the head/tail light, as well as the adhesive side of the tint film before applying the film. Also keep the top surface of the vinyl wet so that your squeegee slides with minimal scratches.

  3. Apply tint film with squeegee, starting with the flat surfaces first. Only use the heatgun when you cant conform the vinyl, try not to stretch the vinyl into place. Work the vinyl into place with the squeegee, while trying to remove the slip solution in the process. Any left over slip solution can be removed by scoring the film and releasing the solution. AIR BUBBLES WILL NOT go away, so if you get any, life the vinyl, spray more solution and work it back down.

  4. Trim the excess vinyl using your utility knife/exacto. I prefer to trim the tint to the face of the head/tail light, rather than tucking it around the edges of the lights. Sometimes the lights rub against the frame and the vinyl starts to lift. Trimming to the face gives it the cleanest finish.

  5. Remove any large slip solution bubbles by scoring the vinyl. Leave the smaller ones as they will evaporate overtime.
