Since moving to a house with a well, we have struggled with ways to maintain the purity of our drinking water. First we tried a small filter that is attached to the kitchen faucet. It helped some, but required very frequent changing.
Our house came with an inline water filter that treated the water as it came into the house from the well. It consisted of 2 cartridges, which were expensive to replace and tended to clog quickly, reducing water pressure to the shower.
Deciding we did not need filtered water to bathe and do laundry, we did some research and opted for the Berkey Water System which we use to purify our drinking and cooking water. An attractive stainless steel unit that sits on our kitchen countertop, the Berkey has been the perfect solution.
The Berkey comes in two parts. The top part contains the 4 filters that are attached with plastic screws. About once a month, the filters are
removed from the top and cleaned. Here you can see the amount of debris they have picked up from the water. The top is washed with soap and rinsed well. The filters are then scrubbed with a coarse pad until they are clean. Here you can see the difference between a clean and dirty filter.
This is the bottom of the Berkey, where the purified water collects. After washing and rinsing, the system is ready to be reassembled. The filters are put back on, and it is ready to be filled. Our model is the Big Berkey that holds nearly 2 gallons of water.
The Berkey Filters can be cleaned 100 times before requiring replacement. This means the filters will last for 5 to 7 years, depending on how hard they have to work.
With the Berkey Water System, we feel confident that the water we are drinking is pure and safe.
I don't know about the cookies though.

I have the exact same filter and have enjoyed using it for a number of years. We are on city service and also use the fluoride reduction cartridges to further polish the water.

If we were on city water we would definitely add the cartridge to reduce fluoride.
