Be More than Just Spam
Many people when they come here they just want to blog. They think if they keep blogging well it’s going to get noticed at some point. I think one of the most under rated things and opportunity here on are other people’s comment section.
No, no , no. I’m not talking about spamming other people’s comment sections with links to your blog(s), or copy/paste begging for follows or upvotes, or all the other stuff.
I’m talking about actually contributing and having an engaging conversation with others outside of your own bubble of your blog. Much more beyond the “thanks, great, nice picture.” Let’s face it, most replies like that sound very disingenuous. It’s like they are talking on twitter and have to watch out for that character limit.
First impression
Consider a comment your opportunity to make a great first impression on that blog.
What is the purpose of a comment like this? Great, you like the post, and I guess you like the 5000 posts that people tend to leave a comment on that like. Can the blog’s author or another commenter do anything with this comment in a positive way? I guess they could leave a “thanks” or ask “what did you like so much about this blog” or people tend to flag it as spam. Best that could happen here is someone follows that based on that comment because they follow everyone. Those kinds of people have a very spammy feed and are not going see that person’s blog. There is also no reason based on that comment for someone to go out of their way to check in on that person from time to time if they have a very busy feed.
Now this comment is short and to the point. It also did not take very long to write. It replies back to the blog in a manner that leaves further room for engagement. This person is looking to join in something that the blog is talking about! They are busy doing “something” (perhaps finishing this blog) but they will also make themselves available for what is going on later that night.
Now you see it was all just one comment all along. Yes, I do have fun poking at what I consider spam. It’s a pass time along with leaving 900-word comments sometimes on other people’s blogs. I know I scare people. I’m trying to curb my addiction to leave long comments.
The point here is I have created an opportunity. But you might be asking “an opportunity for what?” Well to gain followers, get upvotes, and be noticed. Now, do I expect this comment to get me much attention and follows? Not really, but when anyone else scrolls down to the bottom of that blog to finish reading it there is my comment and I’m having a fun time.
Have Fun and a Rewarding Time
If you happen to find a blog where you can contribute your own personal knowledge, experiences, and thoughts consider going for it. How else are you going meet new people who did not see your blog(s) if you don’t go out there into the wild!
Now, most would consider this to be a way too long and a blog should be made out of it. You are right I could have made a blog out of it. I also had very few people following me and even less coming by weekly to see what I been up to.
I left 17 comments in total on a blog. Very few people replied back but that is expected. I added to the conversation in a positive way and I was also noticed for doing so and even rewarded. Just making that a blog and leaving it at that would have robbed me of the enjoyment of meeting and interacting with others.
There is a very large social element here because quite a few people network and create a community to get noticed. If you are off in your own little universe things are just harder alone.
Tricks of a Comment Aficionado
Most of the time when people leave comments they spend zero time doing any formatting, organization or using images. I’m guilty of doing that a lot as well. Taking the extra step on a comment makes it stand out more among the others consider using:
- Bullet points
- Bolding
- Image
- Take a second or two to proof read before posting comment
- Format link
- Using mention
- Comment on other people’s comments
I also like to make sure I’m around for a few hours here or there after posting a blog. This just allows me to see what I missed for the day and reply back to anything I need to as well. People often are very busy and do not think to check up on your blogs even if you are good friends with them. I sometimes go on commenting sprees after writing a blog while I wait for any interaction with my own.
Take advantage of WIN-WIN-WIN scenario. You found a really great blog that you spent some time in leaving a comment. You got some upvotes and now your comment is top or near the top. It’s a perfect time to resteem it! People you’re following might see it and read a great blog. It lets people see what you been up to even if you have not blogged in a few days.
I often look for the comment of the person who resteem a blog and it's disappointing when they did not leave a comment. It gives me zero insight into them why they choose to resteem. I even point out sometimes who resteem it so the author of the blog knows who to thank for leaving the door open for me to just walk right in.
Breaking the Ice or Writers Block
If you are struggling with writer's block or you’re not as confident as you would like to be about writing a blog. Start small start commenting.
You can start off with topics you know a lot about. Then work your way into things you’re not so sure and find yourself leaving more questions than answers. Along the way, you might just find something you want to expand upon yourself into a blog.
Following
I always consider the people I’m following as a great way to find things I want to comment on. I have spent time into curtailing my feed. I get a wide range of different topics and sometimes overlapping ones with differences of opinion.
They also resteem stuff that I enjoy reading. Even more so commenting on.
It’s why I treat Steemit more like a social friend network than anything else. Did I get massive follow backs in my first month here on Steemit? No, I’m building something here. I centrally don’t want do that on spam as that stuff can catch on fire fast.
SEE IT BURNS!!!!

Following you thanks for following me ;)
So I have given much thought to some of the points you made. Sometimes I read a post and think, that was nice or really well written. sometimes I think I really have nothing else to add other then I really like what they wrote. When this happens, I try to find a something to quote or declare my love for the writer. Either way, I agree with you people need to stop commenting with spam anf focus on adding value to each comment.

I just don’t know if everyone is in such a hurry these days or they are just so use to tossing out a “thank you” “oh that looks nice” that they continue this behavior everywhere in their lives.
I really do like your method of finding something you like about it and brining attention to it in the comment section. It helps readers see what others like and maybe even give them a chance to think more about it.

True, however, I think most people are accustomed to saying that looks like and or I like that. Those people must those that always ask how are you, reply fine and move on. They never put into thought a more thoughtful response. I like to answer that question with I am conquering the free the world or living the dream.
How do you answer the question, how are you?!
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

If I have the time I try and break a question like that up into parts. That one is rather easy. My thought process for answering such a question “how are you?” is as follows.
Reply back with how I am doing
I am doing great today / I just had a horrible day / Well there is a reason for day time drinking / meh
Something that replies back with the emotion I have been feeling for the day.
Elaborating further
I am going to be spending the weekend doing this / this just happened / I was not expecting such good news
Here I try and included more details about what makes me feel about that in such a way. It can create further dialog back and forth between people as now they are just talking about their day
Follow up question/answer
How was your day / oh I’m sorry that happened / have a great day
Pulling it out like that makes it look more robotic then it really is. Sometimes it is scary thinking about how the thought process of such a question can be drawn out in that way.

Do you consistently answer this way? I hope more people become honest with their answers like you. <3
I find the more unique my answer the more likely I am to receive an honest response. It is always a bonding moment.

Not always. It can depend on who I am interacting with. Mostly comes down to time. I have to sometimes move conversions towards its end result aka killing/ending it.
I don’t try and continue a conversation as much as I like. I often find just too many things going on!
How would you go about answering the question you posed of “how are you?”

Brilliant insights and advice from one of Steemit's masters of the comment!
The thing about Steemit is that it is not a standard blogging platform like WordPress or Blogger... it's a throwback to the old days of "social" blogging... as we used to do it on Xanga, LiveJournal and others about 10-12 years back; "social" (commenting extensively) was part of the gig. And frankly, I am really happy to see this format making a comeback, of sorts.

What I love about change is more often than not we can start being one of the many contributing factors of said change.
Are there any other “old day” things you would love to be more of a thing on Steemit? I know you have in the past talk about the wonderful experiences you have had on other platforms. I am really looking forward to what Steemit evolves into overtime. So many great possibilities.

Good points. With my wordpress blog I have seen big traffic come from leaving quality comments on other blogs.

The spammers tend to hang out in the mid to high end rewarded blogs. They also like to go after certain tags as they have large potential of people seeing it.
We also have a habit of telling them “no thanks” and people do flag spam here. People either learn and adapt or anger a whale and fold. Some do recover and end up being great members of the community.
A lot of it can be around the culture that is created.

Seriously though. Nice post. You are one of the most engaged – and engaging – members of the Steemit community, @enjar. I always enjoy interacting with you in the comments section. Sometimes I even forget whose post we are commenting on, because our conversations spread across multiple different blogs and branch out to include other people. This is what I love about the social nature of this platform.
You’re doing great, buddy, putting a lot of work into your posts and interacting with people. STEEM ON!!

It is so true. I have conversions in places I don’t even know how they started there in the first place. Heck I even got people starting chats on my old blogs as a place just to keep things going.
I sometimes wonder if someone sees like 10 comments on their blog out of 12 total. They go in and just think “what is going on” and exit back out of there blog lol.
I appreciate the kind words. I have been enjoying Steemit so much so far.

I really like you slogan “comments are where community happens.” You can tell those who are here for the long run and want see Steemit grow vs those who just take advantage of the system.
I am really looking forward to the future of comment sections are more and more people blog and use influence to make it a flourishing feature. Far too many just seem to think it’s a place for a two second sound bite. Perhaps it’s just a culture thing where everyone is just so busy that’s how they view the world now.
A special thanks to @denmarkguy for giving me a shout out. I often go overboard when I leave him a comment. He just creates such a great atmosphere in his blog to leave comments.

I enjoy the comment section a lot and I seem to actually be spending more of my steemit time engaged in conversations and discussion than posting on my blog. Usually, the most rewarding discussions and conversations that initially started from a point of disagreement. I'm really interested in learning why people that I disagree with think the things they think, so I often ask about that under their posts or even share why I disagree with their post. Most of the time this leads to a positive experience here.

I easily spend most of my time on them as well. I have been trying to change that up a little bit since people keep encouraging me to blog a little more with how well I write some comments.
Having a productive disagreement that leads everyone involved into a better understand or causes people to at least rethink their position is always great. I try and do that once in a while. I can usually tell from the reply back I get if I want to peruse the dialoged any further or not.
Some people just want live in there “yes” only environment they have created. Which case I just move on.

Word Choice
That could help some. I fear it would scare others away when you start bringing up more formal sounding words like “monologue.” There is also such a wide range of people from around the world that something like “blog” they can earlier relate to what that is. Something like a “monologue” might get lost in translates or cause more confusion since that is not a normal term.
I do like the usage of dialogue. It makes it a much more powerful meaning. It also separates itself from comments which I feel has devalued over the years. With what a mess YouTube comments, form comments, site new comment, and other comment sections turn into over the years. It’s not all to socking most just continue on with their current habits and viewpoint on what a comment is.

Sometimes I may come across a well written and essentially may have nothing really to add, I would therefore resort to a short comment describing the quality of your post or writting. I don't try to force myself to a certain standard or length of comment. It has to flow. There are things which I am knowledgeable on and there are also things which I am not.
My reason for reading other people's blogs is to learn something new. It usually has to interest me though.
The major advantage of commenting or under someone's blog post, is that it helps me to share my thoughts and knowledge on other topics which I would not write about or does not correspond to my niche.
