How to make a wind bell from seashells? Gift to my mother

in howto •  6 years ago  (edited)

I'm going to visit my mother at the weekend. I haven't seen her since last Christmas, and decided to create something she would love. She loves everything that reminds her of the sea or Greece. She was there long ago with my father and also visited some islands and Meteora.
Well, I took some seashells from Greece. The bigger ones are from a very kind, old Greek fisherman, who gave me a bag full of shells.

Tools and materials:

  • Seashells - 25 pcs
  • A piece of wooden slat
  • String, plastic or hemp
  • Small wooden beads - 32 pcs
  • Tape measure
  • Drilling machine
  • Jigsaw
  • Sandpaper, rough and fine

Step by step:

  • First of all, drill the shells carefully with a fine drill (1-1.5 mm). Notice that they easily break. Select thicker shells!
  • Cut a piece of wooden slat and drill holes as you can see in the picture bellow:

  • Cut a 25 cm string, this will be the hanger. Knot one end and lace a bead like this:

  • thread it through the end hole of the wood like this:

  • Make a hanger like this (The beads and the knots are on the other side of wood):

  • Select 20 or 25 pcs (or 30) seashells that were previously drilled:

  • String them like this - one bead on the wood and one after a shell. Knot the string under the beads.

  • Repeat it 3-5 times - with 4-6 shells in one string
  • Finally, knot the strings, then cut the ends! Enjoy!

very beautiful and creative! I know that it's very difficult to make a hole in the shell so that it does not crack.
