So what if nobody turns up?

This is a frequently asked question in Open Space but it goes for any kind of event or meetup too. People worry that if they call a session or set up an event, no-one will come. It's often interpreted as a long-term fear that people won't come to your birthday party!

Here's what we know from experience:

  1. You will not die
  2. Don't give up too easily, you never know when someone might come along
  3. You've already spent this time, stick with it.

You can trust that, rather than trying to get a refund on your time expenditure and doing something else. You've given yourself time to really think and work on something, whatever it is that you were inspired to suggest. Go with the inspiration. Do that thing.

You might have to get used to sitting on you own for a bit. Perhaps you just see things earlier than others do. Maybe you see the things that are important but not urgent - so people will prioritise something that's just as (or even a little less) important but way more urgent.

It's a good idea to have writing materials with you (all the time!) so that you can either journal about being alone or write what's actually in your head about this subject. That's how this piece originally got written. It just flowed out of me onto the page because it was important to me right at that moment.

Much of my best work has arisen from people not turning up to something else. I got the courage to do Tuttle from running other events that had minimal attendance.
