11 Signs to Help You Spot a Liar

in howto •  7 years ago

Do you like to be lied to?

Dumb question, not because it's an obvious "No", but the truth is, everybody lies! (And this is not a lie)

Fine. Both you and I will agree that we don't like to be lied to.

After working with organizational psychologists and over a decade of consulting work, I’m naturally curious how liars can be spotted. I researched on the topic regularly, watch movies around it (Lie to me, The Mentalist and House are a few that operate on the premise that everybody lies), and even looked into psychological tools like Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnosis, trying to figure out how liars work. And of course, in the process, understand myself better too. Hey, I am just like everybody else, and I caught myself lying even unconsciously sometimes.)

STATS ABOUT LIARS

  • In 10 minutes, an average of three lies were told
  • By four, 90% of children would have learned the concept of lying
  • 12% of adults admit to telling a lie often or sometimes.
  • 8 out of 10 women admit to telling harmless half-truths occasionally.
  • 31% of people admit to lying on their resumes.
  • 13% of patients lie to their doctor.
  • 32% of patients stretched the truth to their doctor.
  • 3 out of 10 people lie about their diet and exercise regiments.
  • 6 lies are told daily by men to their partner, boss, or colleagues.
  • 3 lies are told daily by women to their partner, boss, or colleagues.
  • It's more common to lie over phone calls than face to face chats.
  • 1 lie in every 7 is discovered as far as liars can tell.
  • 1 out of 10 lies are just exaggerations and 6 out of 10 were outright deceptions.
  • 7 out of 10 liars claim they would tell their lies again.
  • Americans tell an average of 11 lies a week.

WHY DO PEOPLE LIE?

So we've established that people lie. The question is, why? Well, over my research, a few reasons come to mind:

  1. Because of shame, and we want to save face
  2. We want an upper hand in any given situation
  3. A brief moment of irresponsibility sinks in, and we want to shift the blame
  4. We want to "keep the peace" and avoid unnecessary confrontation
  5. We want to please someone for personal gains
  6. We want to be nice! (Honey, do I look fat?)
  7. We want to make ourselves feel better.
  8. We believe it's for a greater good
  9. We think the other party cannot handle the truth
  10. We enjoy getting away with it

NOW… HOW DO WE SPOT A LIAR?

Remember: What's written below are not absolute signs, but more like mini-triggers that indicate someone may not be truthful. Hope you don’t take them all as sure things. Also, we've established that everybody lies, so it's better to shift the focus from exposing them to understand the underlying reason.

#1. The Eyes Are Not "Smiling"

You can't assume a smile is natural just by looking at the lips. You have to watch the eyes. Some people note that the absence of "crow's feet" is a telling sign that it's a fake smile. Also, as they say, the eyes are the windows to a person's soul.

#2. About those eyes

Speaking about the eyes being windows to a person's soul, for a right-handed person:

  • If you ask about a question revolving their past, and they look right, it means they are lying.
  • Because of how we are "wired" internally, we will look right when we are trying to create/visual an picture, and we will look left when we are trying to recall a memory.

#3. Speaking Faster than Normal

Well, when someone is anxious and/or nervous, their heart rate increase, pacing up their speech too. Their gestures and actions could be frantic as well. Oh yeah, look out for their pitch. It's usually higher when they are telling a lie.

#4. Ask Them to Story You Backwards

When someone is untruthful, they will usually memorise their stories, in an effort to keep them the same. As you probe further, asking more questions, they will probably simplify their tales, instead of giving more details like a normal person would. They do this because they avoid adding many details, for fear that the facts don’t add up.

By asking them to tell the story backward, which is uncommon, you may be able to pick up those details. Any delay in responses means they are trying to get their stories straight.

#5. There is a Mismatch in their Gestures

As the NLP presupposition goes, "Whatever happens on the inside reflects on the outside", hence the mismatch of body language and what is being said. Watch the shaking of the heads, because sometimes even when they verbally agree with you, they are unconsciously shifting their heads from side to side.

#6. Their Answers Sound Rehearsed

Liars run through their answers repeatedly because they want to be prepared when asked. The problem is, this makes their answers sound less unnatural than usual. The speed in which they responded is also a hint.

#7. Not Surprised When Confronted

Same as above, because they have rehearsed different scenarios and also the responses, naturally, there is no more element of surprise for them. As a matter of fact, police officers told me that a common trick they play on suspects was to put them in a cell overnight. Because they have somewhat prepared for the fate, the first one to sleep is usually the guilty one. The innocent ones are those that couldn't sleep because they are still trying to prove their innocence.

#8. Breaking Eye Contact

When lying, a person will break eye contact due to the shame or guilt they feel. Be careful though, because as mentioned in #2, they may be looking left or right as they are trying to visualize a mental image or recall a memory.

#9. Over Compliment

Because deep down, they knew they had done something wrong, they would try to be nice to make up for it. The moment you feel the compliments are over-the-top, perk up your senses!

#10. Watch for the "No's"

The way someone says No is a potential sign to lying too. For example:

  • They say No and look away (breaking eye contact)
  • They say No in a "sing song" voice (they are trying to change the mood of the situation)
  • They say No really quickly (means they have rehearsed)
  • They say No after a period of time (means they were deliberating their answers)

#11. Your "spider-sense" is tingling

Your gut feeling (or sixth sense as the women will call it as), is more accurate that you think. You see, while our conscious mind can only focus on up to 9 things at a time (usually is seven +2 or -2), our unconscious mind takes in everything.

Your gut-feel is based on the signs your unconscious mind picks up, so it would be wise to listen to them. Professional liars know this, which is why they usually try to distract you while they work on their moves.

Yup. Being lied to is a crappy feeling, but we have to remain objective of the situation, especially if it happens to be work-related.

And remember, the important thing is not if a person is lying to you, but rather why is the person lying to you? What’s motivating them to do so? What are they really trying to say?

Er, so... happy hunting?

Oh yeah, do leave a comment on how you normally know when someone is lying to you?

Wow this is nice.liars usually stammer when often told to repeat what they earlier said.

haha, true! It's probably forcing the brain to work over time to recalling the exact details!

Reminds me of the line from dr zhivago:
There are two kinds of men and only two. And that young man is one kind. He is high-minded. He is pure. He's the kind of man the world pretends to look up to, and in fact despises. He is the kind of man who breeds unhappiness, particularly in women. Do you understand?

interesting article thanks for sharing.

Wow, that's a good quote there! And from an old classic too! Movie buff?

I enjoy the older movies, theres fewer explosions and a lot of boring dialogue. Im guessing these dont sell as many tickets, provoke too much thought and might require good writers.. but what do I know.

There are also those who'd rather be lied to than to be told the truth because the truth hurts.

Personally, I find it easier to tell the truth simply because it's the truth and easier to remember than lies.

As they say, "One lie leads to another lie" -- forgetful me will forget which lie told to whom and worse, forgot the lie and tell the truth. :p

Yeah, I'm prepping myself for old age too, haha! Honesty is the best policy, although to many, they can't handle the truth. Hence, we got to sugar coat it. And then, we apply a couple more coatings and toppings and dressings and before you know it, it has become a lie...

And heart beats more faster than usual😊 great post!

Not so easy to spot the heart beat though. Other than physically touching them, you got a trick?

Yeah, right 😊

Aspberger's Syndrome seems to be expressed as an inability to lie. It also manifests as an inability to recognize when one is being lied to. The deceit lies in the fact that many of us have been taught that white lies are okay. An Aspie cannot discern a liar - this article makes so much sense - that I resteemed and upvoted it both. Thank you, you have gained a growing minnow follower.

Thanks @lennythyme! Following you too!

Good point about Aspberger's Syndrome. I read about it when I was researching this article.

Agree on the white lies being ok. That's when we start tip-toeing across the line, bit by bit, and before we know it, we don't even see the line anymore.

A skill so few possess, yet so important because some people start lying and they feel guilt maybe the first time. When they see that their lies do pay off, it's like that old cliche in films about "the first time you killed a man". It gets easier and easier.

But have you seen what happens when bigger lies are told, especially the cover-up kind because you fucked up but don't possess the balls or ovaries to fess up and take your punishment?

It snowballs while it follows you. You have to keep up the lie. Literally live it every day. Proclaiming the untruth is just the clap of the starting pistol.

As time passes, you had better remember every last word you ever said about it and to whom. Memories fade, you are bound to slip up and if you lied about something criminal or bordering on criminal, and it comes crashing down, there are usually a whole bunch of people who will get hurt.

💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣

I prefer brutal honesty, even if it stings, because then everyone knows where they stand with each other and can adapt their lives around this.

Wow, @nonsqtr, I love the way you exaggerated the details! it's gonna make everyone fearful of lying in the first place.

I have to agree with you. First it's the guilt that will eat you up everyday you're holding on to the lie, and the consistent having to look behind your shoulders all the time, that's gonna kill you big time.

Honesty is still the best policy, eh?

There are liars.. and then there are good liars. Imagine if a liar trained so good that he/she is constantly aware of these pointers too. But that is bordering on sociopathy/psychopathy already.

I personally think that there are times when lying is necessary to (I can think of a scenario or two) prevent useless conflict.

Even so, I find life much easier to live by being honest. much less stress.

I agree with the last sentence. Since I was little, whenever I would thought of lying or even lied, I would feel so confused that eventually I would say the truth :)

Haha, that's to keep things simple. Over time, we may forget what lie we tell to who!

Actually AJ Jacobs' did an experiment where he went for a week without lying. The conclusion? People may ask for the truth, but they are happier being lied to.

For me, the gut feeling & body language, sometimes I just feel weird/strange when talking to that person especially he/she is close to you. Immediately I will feel something is wrong here. When I go deep he/she starts to tell a story rather than admit or apologize.
Sometimes I lie for good surprise or good intention behind, for example, I went to bought birthday cake or gift in the middle of karaoke session with a group of friends, then when being asked where did I go, I told them I went to the toilet. I assume that consider a good lie? :P

Haha, that's a white lie. Some would say harmless, right? But the question is, to what extend? And also, what's the intention behind it. But I believe yours is fine, so let's say it's forgiven, haha.

Have a nice weekend, chief.

Yeap, it is the intention behind the lie, white lie too can turned into bad lie when the intention behind is hurtful to the there parties.
You too have an awesome weekend @maverickfoo!

One can also lie by telling the truth, what they truly believed happened but it did not. Law Enforcement runs into this all the time.
Memory fails over time.
I believe a lie has to have the element to deceive with intent.

Sometimes the mind manipulates the truth, and when we recall it, some information is being deleted and distorted.

@maverickfoo... I think you bluffing me 😂😂

Shhhhh....

Not Surprised When Confronted

I'll try to use and observe all these tips to catch a lie. But believe me, my friends when they want to tell a lie, they go all the way out to make sure no one finds the truth.

Lies do save at the moment, but in the long run honesty pays more.

Lying also spoils your reputation, so I'll say honesty should be the word, and just try to say the truth at any point in time, that way people will eventually get to love you and will vouch for you in the case of any situation.

Keep your great work going. Glad to be learning daily from you 😀

Thanks @nexrules! Happy to know you found the information useful.

Yes, I agree with you. Honesty is the best policy. :)

We sure that when we lie once it will create another lie

Hence the saying, one lie leads to another ;)

Confession here, sometimes I tend to lie for various reasons in your list, for other's good, to skip work and etc. I used to lie for MC :X

As a liar myself, I realized when we lie (for whatever reasons), we lose a tiny speck of conscience inside us. We don't feel much but as we lie more often, we are losing our conscience and eventually losing our sense of moral. We even lie to ourselves, thinking it's right to lie.

Do you have this or met people like this before?

Oh yeah, regularly too. One of my earlier business mentors told me "tell a lie ten times and it'll become the truth."

Somehow I feel they get the thrill from lying too, kinda like "let me see how long I can prolong this charade".

Check out Bryan Cranston's Wakefield for a nice depreciation of that. Not so much the conscience side, but more the thrill.

Thrill? SERIOUSLY? What kind of thrill is that, that you get from lying? I felt guilt instead.

Talking about prolonging a lie is when I would do as a joke. I would basically lie and convince myself that joke is real. And I'll tell to my friends like it's REAL. So my lies are not easily spotted ;)

Hahaha, I wish I have time for movies.. Thank you for sharing :)

I think it's the same kind of thrill serial killers would get too.

I see... Then it makes sense but I can never understand those kind of thrills... Good insight. When I spotted a liar, I'll be interested to know "why" they lied. This'll be interesting ;)

What an interesting article!

Good question

My daughter learned how to lie before she turned 3. Clearly I am not a good parent as I let her get away with it and she figures it is okay to do so. "Honey you ate dinner?" "Yes." "Then who's food is that?" "Uuumm, mommy's. Now lets play." lol

Gut feeling of someone lying is always the best, and it comes from experience. Thanks.
