HOW TO MILK A VENOMOUS SNAKE

in howto •  7 years ago  (edited)

Haven't you always wanted to try this?

Well, even if you haven't, I sure have. Last night, I finally gave it a go, I wasn't sure if I would be able to be successful or not, but sometimes you never know until you try, right?

"Milking" a venomous snake is the process of collecting the snakes venom, usually by having it bite through a membrane that allows the venom to be collected in a container beneath it. Though I had never done this before, it was a lot of fun.

As always, no one else ever needs to try anything that @papa-pepper does. Some of it may be dangerous, and I am in no way encouraging anyone to try anything, I'm just demonstrating how to in case you wondered. Enjoyed the video!

HOW TO MILK A VENOMOUS SNAKE VIDEO

STEP BY STEP

First, get a glove. I used vinyl, though I think that latex may also work.

You will also need a glass container. I used a mason jar. To make the venom collector, stretch the glove over the mouth of the jar and secure it in place. I used a rubber band to securely hold the glove over the mouth of the jar.

If you want, you can use these things to pick up the snake. If you unsure of the process, have no fear, for I have already done a #howto video on how to use these things. Click here for more.

Grab the venomous snake by the neck so that it is free to bite.

Hold the top of the jar with the glove stretched over the mouth in front of the snake. It should attempt to sink its fangs into the glove, which allows the venom to drip into the jar.

If you are successful, you should end up with some venom inside the jar. If you are unsuccessful, you may end up with some venom inside of you. This may not look like much, but, "a little dab will do you!"

TRUST ME, I KNOW

Yes, it seems like once again @papa-pepper has made a #howto post that no one will really be using. I guess sometimes my posts are a little more narrow than others, and don't appeal to a very large audience.

Also, the lab coat and glasses are optional. However, since this is my first time, I wanted to look professional so the snake didn't think that I was a novice.

On the bright side, at least now you do know how, and I didn't get bit yet. Also, I'm not really sure of any "household uses" for snake venom, so the practical application of this information is still missing... Anyway, thanks for watching!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

NO, I have NOT always wanted to try that! eeeekkkk!

How about now?

Lol, ok,ok I'll give it a go!

Crazy doc-pepper i enjoy the video thanks for sharing. have fun milking more snake :D:D:D

Lol - Dr. Pepper!

I always want to try it
but snakes make me nervous and I am chicken for my safety

But I live the post :)

Glad that I finally got the opportunity. It was interesting!

You are doing well

No just No... Although I understand the benefits of snakes and having them as part of the eco system I draw the line at milking the dang things!
Maybe it is time to get some cows for you to milk!
You are giving this old silver haired woman more silver (and I did not think that was possible)...

LOL- we will look into a cow.

Good work..

Thanks! It was interesting to try!

The steemit uniform should become a standard. A highly entertaining video. :)

I thought it was a good idea! Thanks.

It gives a whole another level of credibility to the process.

LOL - Thanks - mission accomplished!

you have crazy hobby :D

Crazy hobby!

When did you get that dope lab coat with your username on it? It needs some dirt on it : )

Thanks for showing us this one. I umm snakes….

Always interesting to see the process of things I would never find myself doing. Just to make sure I am not missing out on something I might enjoy. In which case nope—still hate snakes.

Lol, I try to keep the coat clean, for my experiments!

Wow... it's a very challenging job @papa-pepper. you are doing professionally. you are great daddy.

Thank you! Glad you liked it!

I'm down with the fact you have regard towards the snake. Give this one a raise! Do they have names?

This one was a Cottonmouth, but they are wild.

One of these days, my friend... one of these days...

One of these days you will try it too?

No one of these days you're going to try to milk the wrong snake!

Sexy lab coat there, Dr Pepper ;)

How long does it take the snake to remake his venom supply?

It can take anywhere from a day to weeks.

Oh wow.

Are you using the venom for something?

No... not really. Do you need some?

That is a terribly generous offer, Papa, however I cannot think of any purpose I would have with snake venom.

But thank you :)

I was wondering if you were going to perform some radical mad scientist experiments or something- its the white lab coat, I can't help it ;)

I'm going to try filming one later today!

A little Friday Fun Lab?

MuaHahaaa

Sweet ;)

Maybe next try rhis with an crocodile? 🐍😆

I don't think that they are venomous...

I might need to try this. How about killing the snake to get the venom? And does it mean any kind of venomous snake would work?

Not sure about any kind. This one was a type of pit viper which have the large fangs in front. Other venomous snakes like the Coral snake have much tinier teeth, and some kinds are rear-fanged...

It sure worked with this one though, and I'd rather not kill them.

For all I care about kind of snakes, not viper.

Rattle preferably

No way! I see that rope looking animal, I disappear.

That is a pretty common response.

That looks like fun! Living in South-Africa, we do have a lot of snakes but I have never been fortunate enough to milk a snake... Looks like a great experience.

Since I'm intrigued by such things, it was a lot of fun and a learning experience.

Oh my goodness graciousssss!!! This gave me the heebie jeebies. No man!!!

May i ask why you milked the snake?
How much venom can one snake generate in day, and also, how poisonous is that venom?!?!

Onggggoooshhh!!!!

I just did it for fun. I'm not sure beyond that!

Hehe. You and I have different ideas of fun, good sir!

Lol, I've heard that before!

great post
follow me @sairahamdan

I really really hope i never need to do this lol

LOL - I hope so too!

And how would you make the anti-venom from that?

Not sure. Haven't gotten that far yet, plus, I'm not a real scientist... I just have the lab coat.

Ohh, thats all you need to be one anyway haha

Good point!

@papa-pepper, it would be the next smart thing to do. Living in an area with that much snakes it wouldnt be a crazy idea learning how to make anti-venom. I read somewhere that anti-venom is expensive and there seems to be a shortage in some parts of the world. DOn't know how much of that is true but it wouldnt hurt to have anti-venom ready just in case :) or...you could dose yourself with small amount spread over a period of time so you get to be immune...:)

you could dose yourself with small amount spread over a period of time so you get to be immune...:)

I had considered that. We will see! Thanks.

No, I can safely say I never felt the least bit inclined to milk a snake, but thanks for the instructions anyway 8-). I'm sticking with milking cows and goats.

You can make anit-venom from a cow? Amazing! I learn something new every day! Thanks @ocrdu!

8-)

Dude that lab coat! Makes me want to call you a doc. But then it'd have to be Dr. Pepp...Papa?

Either way, youre nuts man. Great stuff!

Just trying to have an adventure every day... if you know the feeling!

Haha! I might know a thing or two about that ;-)

Your adventures are legit though. I'll leave the venom to you!

I'm gonna start with milking a mosquito first😂😂😂😁😁...me and snakes are two planets apart

LOL!

I HAVE always wanted to try this. Problem is, I'm naturally clumsy, so I'm guessing it might not be the best combination. Great post and thanks for sharing!

Yeah...clumsy and venomous snake handling dont seem to go well together haha. Also a reason I will leave it be!

At least you get to watch it be done again!

All I can think of is getting freaked out when holding the snake, dropping it, and having it bite me in the jugular.

If you dropped it quick enough, it would miss the jugular... unless you collapsed.

Can you sell the Venom? I wonder if people can use it to make vaccines and stuff like that.

Not sure... but if so, I just got a new part time job!

Hardcore dude.
Having lived in SE Asia an Oz for a long time I came across the odd deadly snake. Not once did I ever think "Right, I'll milk the bugger!"
Y'know what though, I'd give it a go, what's the worst that could happen to a clueless Brit?! 😉

Sounded a bit like a stapler when he bit into the vinyal glove...
Just a quick question, @papa-pepper. What do you do with the venom and how do you dispose of your contaminated equipment?

Yeah, and interesting sound when that got punctured. This one I was just doing for fun, so I didn't keep the venom.

I gotta say that I was giggling at the beginning, with your smart lab coat + glasses... until the snake came to view with those large, sharp fangs. I was grimacing at the sound it made while biting on the gloves. 😵

Was won'dring what the venom would be useful for? I remember my grandma who used to talk about her brother (who I did not meet anymore) who was very fond of snakes too. He also helped people bitten my snakes by sucking out the venom from them. Guess you'd know how he died. Hehe...

Thanks for sharing @papa-pepper! 😉

Woooh, I'm not gonna do that... btw you look so great on your outfit @papa-pepper lol you looked so pro :P

Thanks! That was what I was going for!

Wow @papa-pepper, I like your guts. I did not even know a snake could be milked talk more of a venomous one. Good work

now that is very cool, but I wouldn't try that at all lol
