How To Properly Embed YouTube Videos Into Your Steemit Article And Make Views Count In Your YT Channel [tutorial]

in howto •  8 years ago  (edited)

When I started to vlog on steemit I made a huge mistake regarding the video embedding.

The biggest problem is actually that I can't correct my mistake since articles on steemit can't be edited after 7 days anymore.

So you better do it correctly right from the start :-)

To prevent you from doing the same stupidity, I'd like to share my experience / knowledge with you today.

There is a trick that makes the views on steemit count in your YouTube channel!

Make The Views Count!

On YouTube traffic is key no matter where it comes from.

Especially when you are a beginning vlogger, it's key that you generate as much views as possible. They are the basis for your future followership and visibility on the whole video platform.

There are different sources where the traffic can come from. Views can be generated outside YouTube's borders but still increase your view count.

Yes, let's do some magic!

4 Steps How To Embed Your Videos Properly

1) Click On The Link "Share" Below The Video You Want To Include In Your Steemit Article

DON'T DO THAT! Here's The Mistake I Made: I Used The Link That Appears Automatically When Clicking On "Share".

2) You Rather Click On "Embed" - The Link That Appears Below The Link "Share" On What You've Clicked Before. Then Copy The Blue Marked Code Fragment

3) Switch To "Raw HTML" Mode In Your Steemit Editor

4) Then Paste The Code Fragement Into The HTML Code (I Usually Copy It Inside A P-Tag That Leaves A Little Space Around The Video Frame Then).

Then your video is shown in the preview mode. In the example above you can see that the title your video has on YouTube automatically appears here. That doesn't happen when you simply copy and paste the link of the video here. So that's how you may notice if you have correctly embedded your video or not.

If you didn't embed it like this, all the views generated on steemit would't have an impact on your view count on YouTube.

Important: I always include the video code fragment in my steemit article in the very end after having finished the rest of my article.

Why? Sometimes I included it earlier and it disappeared after publishing the article then.

That also may happen if you EDIT your article after it has been published!

So ALWAYS ALWAYS check the preview of your article (and make sure the iframe tag is still there) before updating / publishing it again.

Maybe it has to do with the iframe-tag which is not loved very much by the steemit UI.

Or maybe it's simply a bug that needs to be fixed? I have no idea. I'll copy @sneak here just in case he wants to add something from the developers´ perspective.

Proving that it works:

Since I started to embed my videos correctly the "external views" on YouToube have significantly increased and contributed to a nice traffic boost.

You can check all the traffic information in your "Video Manager" on YouTube, simply clicking on the link "ANALYTICS" in the navigation bar on the left.

I hope you find this somehow helpful and inspiring.

There are more and more YouTubers / vloggers joining steemit, so I thought this might be an important information to share.

Enjoy your weekend, Steemians! 🏄

Marly,
Thanks so much for the information! I just made a blog post that was from the "share" section that you said not to use! This is really helpful. I do have another question though - if you use the embed code does it start from the exact second of the video that you wanted it to?
Again, thanks for the helpful article!

You are more than welcome! :-)

If you use the embed code does it start from the exact second of the video that you wanted it to?

I don't understand your question. Embedding means that you just use a window on steemit and the view is generated on YouTube itself. So the clip always starts at timestamp 0:00 after pressing the play button.

OK I'll put it differently. If I want a video to start at 1:05, I know that in the code i need to put ?start=65 in the html code, but it doesn't seem to be working. Do you know how to get it to play from a certain time point in the video?

Hi @mrbmrsb, if you want to do that youtube embed allows that feature. See image how i set it to start at 1:05 and not at the 0:00.
Start Video.png

Im not a programmer. But i think you can do that in discription , like 1:05 and what event starts ant that time .

Think you might have birthed a new Vlogger here.... at the very least a re-Vlogger. I mean there's an abundance of YouTube videos that I believe haven't had enough exposure and now know how to make that happen on steemit. Thank you for taking the time to type this out and edit it for all of us... you're awesome!

Thanks for your kind words!!! It's been my pleasure.
Monetization of content is key - especially to (frustrated) YouTubers. So giving them a new opportunity on steemit is a win win situation, helping steemit to grow and them as well.

OHH shit, this I did not know! I think this could really help a lot of people, and should be included in recruitment efforts. Youtubers might really want to start posting here if they knew it would easily direct more traffic their way.

Yap. "Oh shit" was my reaction, too 🙄
I was wondering why my views on YT didn't increase much even though I generated a lot of views on steemit. That's why I started to investigate and then found out what the problem was.
I hope a lot of people will read this and do better!

I agree just started to do this from YT to Steemit, thanks very much I will spread the word.

Hey @surfermarly, you just got your star on a Steemit Walk of Fame 😊

You are welcome my dear @surfermarly, and you deserved it 😊 I'm so glad you like it.

Thank you so much! How could I not like it?!? :-)))I've even shared it with my Facebook friends and will do so on Twitter if you don't mind :-)

Interesting, did not know yet but no plans to be a YT star anyway :-) - upvoted and resteemed

No plans yet you'd rather say 😉😉😉 Thanks for the support, Uwe!!!
Have a great day with your beautiful family!!!

Thanks a lot - and maybe not yet :-) How can we do the embed in markdown @surfermarly ? Rarely use the one you described.

That's really helpful! I was grabbing the wrong link from youtube, will follow your instructions from now on. Thank you!

Me, too!! And it really annoyed me, haha! Especially the fact that I can't correct my mistake.
We should really have an option to edit our posts after 7 days...

@piedpiper might be interested in this, think that's the reason he was adding links to his videos in posts instead.

Thanks, I didn't know about this!

You are welcome! Probably there are some established users that already know how to do it properly. But I've seen some newbies making the same mistake that I made. So I thought that it was a good moment to share my experience here 😉
Have a great weekend!

Likewise! Enjoy!

Awesome Post. I am (very) Old School & new to all this stuff. Thanks for all help. Much Success!!

You are very welcome and thank you!! Old school doesn't matter, we've all started from zero here so no worries about that 😉

@surfermarly
Wow! I didn't realize this! I will most definitely start going by the steps that you talked about when I am embedding my YouTube videos. Thanks again for sharing and I hope you have a great day! 😊

You are more than welcome!!
Me neither. I've been including the wrong link for weeks 🙄🙄🙄

We all learn from one another which is what is cool about this amazing site! Hope the Surf is up or however they say it! :) I'm not a surfer and I don't know the lingo but Happy Surfing! :)

I don't know the lingo either 😅
Happy Sunday!

And a Happy Sunday to you too, @surfermarly 😎

Thanks Marly, this is exactly what I needed to know- I never use editor I just write using markdown, I may have to change my ways!

Fantastic! That's what I'm pretending with this post: provide a helping hand 😉

Thank you. I will start posting You tube videos and this has been really helpful

Then it was perfect timing - cool! 😉
Best of luck for your vlogging then.

I'll be re-editing my recent posts now to boost my old YouTube channel, much appreciate the advice :) Resteem'd & followed.

That's your blog isn't it? :-)
https://steemit.com/@sighmanjestah

I don't have any other blog besides steemit either. So the information was regarding the steemit blog (as stated in the headline) ;-)

My bad @surfermarly, I meant to write vlog, ack and actually the editor autocorrects blog to vlog.

So ALWAYS ALWAYS check the preview of your article

oops, I try to do that but like you say when editing things can go awry. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Going to correct it now. : )
SDG

No problem at all 😉

Thank you, I really appreciated the article. I was getting ready to pull my hair out trying to figure out how to get more than just a hyperlink into my post. ❤️

Yo @captainobviou3 did you see this?

so smart :>

Thanks :)

Very helpful - thank you :)

You are more than welcome :)

awesome info. thanks!

You are welcome!

I definitely did not know this either. Thank you so much. Upvoted and followed.

OMG i really cant believe I've been doing it wrong!!! thanks so SO much for this, I've just updated my article. So i basically copied the embedded link and posted in the article and it comes up as a video still! fingers crossed! xxx

The easiest way to test if you are doing right is:
When the title of the video (the one given in YouTube) appears at the top of the video window after embedding it into the steemit article and updating (uploading) the article again, then it's correctly embedded. If there is no white colored title, then you may check it again.

You are more than welcome :-)

im not sure i get this part, lol sorry I'm not super technical, is there a way to see it by just looking at my article? also does that mean that on my website i wasn't embedding it correctly as well and views won't count ? or they will?

Let me check your last article and I'll tell you if it's correctly embedded now :-) You can also send me the link to your website if you want.

ok so my website is this one www.allasyummyfood.com
Gosh i hope it counts there, otherwise i will have to re do the whole website! :O

I followed your advice and did a "step by step video tutorial" explaining how to properly embed the YT videos in steemit articles:
https://steemit.com/vlog/@surfermarly/youtubers-on-steemit-this-one-is-for-you-make-traffic-from-steemit-count-in-your-youtube-channel-step-by-step-video-tutorial

Hope that will help you :-) I'm going to have a look at your website anyways...

omg amazing!!! I'm going to watch this NOW!

thank you for this :)

thank you very much for the info

Thanks a lot Marly! You gave a very useful information, good for youtubers.
You are awesome!

In case anyone interested, on mobile devices you can long click on video to get embed link.

Not sure what you mean. Actually I haven't found a way to generate an embed code with my mobile device. Or better said: I haven't found the option to generate the code in the YouTube mobile application.
Maybe you should do another post about this? 😉

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I will 😉 and may I know what device you use, IPhone or Android?

Cool!
iPhone 6 :)

Yea! Thank you so much for this post. I was just trying to figure it out and had read if I just put the link in there, it would pull up the video but I wanted the video to show! This definitely helped! THANK YOU!!

Good info, thank you!

My pleasure!

Thanks @surfermarly! This was a most useful post, I learned how I can embed videos into my steemit posts now, it was not that hard, just the good old embedding code, thank you very much!!!

Is this the proper way to do it now? Can't you just paste the link in the post box?

Yes, you can paste the link of the video, but there is a question of whether YouTube tallies external views. This post is not about the ability to embed, to view, to watch, to see, YouTube videos on third-party websites like Facebook, Steemit, Busy, etc, but whether or not they are counted as views by YouTube as seen on the views count on the YouTube videos themselves. That is the debate. And the argument is that they must be placed in an iframe and/or certain types of video framing code(s) to maybe get the video views to be actually counted. I am guessing it is either maybe true to some extent or completely true or at least possibly was true in the past at least even if it is no longer the case but am not sure exactly yet. I'll have to look into this to see.

This will be very helpful, thank you.

This helped me soooo much, I am looking for infor on posting link in my dTube descriptions. If you would be able to help it would be appreciated.
thanks again!!

We know that this is truly basic, but it really helps for STEEMIT Community! Great job!

so useful with the photos and everything really helps visual learners thank you!! thank you!

You are saying that YouTube does not tally external viewing of YouTube videos if they're not played within an iframe code or in similar video coding frames excluding the automated embedding which occurs already on many websites like Facebook, Steemit, and Busy? Is that still the case now? What you are saying seems to be a good idea if it does help give external views a count, a tally, and that is good. I always thought it would automatically tally and count all views from anywhere and everywhere, but maybe not then. Thanks. I'm Oatmeal.

Thank you!
You’re the kind of people one should properly follow. Thanks really.

Was just what I needed thanks!

thanks for sharing your experience, it is very useful inforamtion. thanks Marly.

Very helpful.

Thanks for this tutorial !

You're more than welcome! Hope you gonna have fun sharing your videos on Steem though :-) Merry Xmas!

You Rock.
