Why we should now trust Huberman less as a source.

I've been seeing people make shallow defenses that his personal lapses are irrelevant to his reliability, and it's so trivially disprovable that I think it's worth the time.

Humans are capable of extreme compartmentalization, and it's not uncommon for people to be awful in one sphere (career, romance, family) yet still beloved in the others. At the same time, it's also true that character is partly global, and someone displaying extreme dishonesty in one sphere (like Huberman's sex/love addict life of constant deception) is much more like to be dishonest in other spheres (like their science research and reporting).

Like, it should be obvious in the abstract that a serial cheater is more likely to plagiarize, right? Like imagine that a NYT reporter was recently found to have committed extensive fraud and plagiarism, and you were given the names of 5 NYT reporters - the plagiarist and 4 picked at random from the full-time writing staff. Next you are given a single piece of information: that exactly one of them is a Huberman-level liar/cheater. What is the chance the super-cheater is the super-plagiarist? For sure it is well above the 1/5th of random chance, I think it's hard to justify it being less than 40% (2x the likelihood), and I'd bet the over on 50%. Virtue does not correlate perfectly across spheres of life, but it correlates a hell of a lot more than zero!

And that's game over as far as whether Huberman should now be viewed as a less reliable source. Sure there is tons of room to argue about how much less reliable, how material it is, whether one should stop listening to him...but only once you've conceded my point, and stopped this nonsense that it's "just his personal life" and irrelevant to his career as a lifestyle influencer / science reporter / etc.

Like, sorry dudes, but living a total constant lie has more than zero predictive power about a person's reliability as an information source why do I even need to say this 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️?!

And WTF is up with so many men placing such a low value on integrity that a story like this has zero effect on their opinion about an influencer they follow? Guys, you need to spend less time listening to Huberman and more listening to Dr Jordan B Peterson, simple as that.
