For day 1 of my Huel journey, I decided I was going to have Huel for breakfast and lunch, and then have a traditional meal in the evening. So, the first task was to prepare my breakfast.
Huel comes in resealable 1.75kg pouches which, according the website, last for a year unopened, or 6 months opened. My first order was for 28 meals, and this was provided as 2 pouches...
With your first order, they also provide a mixing/drinking bottle...
...a couple of scoops for measuring out the powder acurately...
...and a free T-shirt!
The powder is very fine, and comes in two varieties; unflavoured, and vanilla sweetened. I'd opted for the vanilla flavour, and the pack had a pleasant sweet aroma when opened. You can add fruit and other things to flavour it if you like, but I thought I'd stick with it "as is" for my first try.
The recomended mix is around 500ml of water, then 3 scoops of Huel. The bottle has handy volume markers on the side, so it's easy to get the desired quantities...
The bottle also has a removable plastic mesh inside to help remove any lumps in the mixture as you shake it up.
After a giving it a nice long shake, my breakfast was ready...
The taste was pleasant enough. Kind of like a vanilla milkshake, but with more of an "oaty" flavour. The texture was smooth, but a little powdery. Not sure if shaking it for longer would help. Some people blend it, so I might give that a try another time.
Once I'd finished, I washed up the bottle and prepared a 2nd batch for my lunch. Once mixed, they say it will keep for up to 24 hours refrigerated, so it's quite convenient for taking to work.
The morning went well. I did feel a little hungrier than usual, but nothing too bad. Had my Huel for lunch and felt satisfied again for a while. Began to get hungry again by the middle of the afternoon, but a couple of pieces of fruit kept me going until the evening.
So far so good; but just before leaving work I began to feel quite tired and I could feel a headache coming on. This got progressively worse through the evening and I had to take some painkillers. Started reading the Huel forums and found that this is quite a common thing; especially if your diet hadn't been that good before hand.
I also realised that I hadn't drunk any coffee all day, as I hadn't felt thirsty due to all the Huel liquid in my stomach, so maybe that had something to do with it too. Perhaps jumping straight into two Huel meals per day wasn't such a good idea.
Some adjustments needed tomorrow it seems!
