The newest right-wing conspiracy theory is that Humanitarian Parole is a secret program that was just recently discovered by virtue of some FOIA request.
It was never a secret. When it started it was announced publicly (which is how I found out about it), and twenty states sued to stop it...and lost.
Beneficiaries of the program are lawfully present in the USA, they are not "illegals."
The government doesn't pay for the flights. I should know, I bought the plane tickets for most of my 49 beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries have to pay for their work permits. Again, I should know, I paid over $18,000 in fees to USCIS for work permits.
If somebody doesn't like Humanitarian Parole, they should say why, without lying about what the program is or what it does. This is not a secret program to fly illegal immigrants into the USA on the taxpayer dime. It is a lawful pathway for otherwise ineligible people to be admitted to the USA for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit.
Humanitarian Parole is being given to 30,000 people from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Haiti each month. Why 30,000? That's an agreement the Biden administration made with Mexico to accept 30,000 expulsions of nationals of these countries. Mexico does not have to accept any expulsions, and this is the condition upon which they are accepting some.
If the GOP gets their way, Humanitarian Parole will end...and Mexico will stop accepting expulsions of nationals from these countries. That will dramatically increase irregular border crossings, because the government will have no choice but to release people after they turn themselves in.
Finally, irregular border crossings by nationals of these countries dropped dramatically after the program was announced, but then increased. Why? Because of a massive backlog of applications. People don't know if or when their application will be processed, so they no longer see parole as a realistic possibility. Eliminate the numerical cap and you will see irregular border crossings drop to a small percentage of what it is today.
