The Bible with its teachings and stories teaches that arrogance and pride lead men to ruin, but on the other hand humility and listening towards blessing and life, as the Book of Proverbs explains: "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom" Proverbs 11:2; and the life of King Hezekiah, of the Kingdom of Judah, was not an exception to this instruction of wisdom.
According to the story in the Second Book of Chronicles, Hezekiah feared God in his heart and followed the path of his ancestor David: "He did what was pleasing in the LORD's sight, just as his ancestor David had done" 2 Chronicles 29:2.
But Hezekiah had difficult times to govern, he had to face the tyrant Sennacherib who, commanding the Assyrian forces, attempted to take the city of Jerusalem. And during this time Hezekiah fell seriously ill, most likely the illness that devastated the Assyrian army and caused its withdrawal has affected him as well. The Bible states that Hezekiah took over as king at the age of twenty-nine and ruled for twenty-five, a short life by modern standards, but long for those times.
The Bible relates that God gave him more years to live after his illness, but his victory against the Assyrians made him pedantic and arrogant, but God with his rejection corrected him towards humility, with these words the Bible relates the events:
"In those days Hezekiah became sick and was about to die. He prayed to the LORD, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign. But Hezekiah was conceited, so he didn't repay the LORD for his kindness. The LORD became angry with him, with Judah, and with Jerusalem. Hezekiah and the people living in Jerusalem humbled themselves when they realized they had become conceited. So the LORD didn't vent his anger on them during Hezekiah's time" 2 Chronicles 32:24-26.
