You know something's bad when it gets banned from Reddit. That's what happened to the incels (involuntary celibates) in 2017. Incel culture revolves around mainly heterosexual men who can't find women, so they get together in various Internet circles. You know who was involved in incel culture? Alek Minassian, the Toronto van attacker.
Minassian posted "The Incel Rebellion has already begun! We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys!" on Facebook. For those of you who don't know what Chads and Stacys are, they're the stereotypical high school popular clique of adulthood. Their average counterparts are called virgins and Beckys. Because the victims of the attack were mostly women, it is possible that he acted out of feeling rejected by women. However, after this incident, he just threw whatever luck he had with women down the drain.
If you want the hot chick or the hot dude, assess why. Do you want to be with them or be them? If it's the former, gather up the nerve to talk to and get to know them. If you get rejected, cry your eyes out, eat every snack in sight, and realize that they are a person with their own preferences just like you. If they treat you like dirt, they're not worth it anyway. If it's the latter, improve yourself. Eat healthier. Work out. Straighten out your back. Write poems about ridiculous Tumblr genders (cough @kaliyuga cough) and scrape up some cash on Steemit. Don't turn to Chad and Stacy culture and certainly do not commit any acts of terrorism.
The whole "Chad" and "Stacy" thing is for people whose worth is based off of comparing their experiences to someone else's public image. Not only that, many news outlets got the wrong guy with a very similar name. Alex Minissian, the other guy, got harassed by numerous individuals and organizations on Facebook. I don't know if he plans to change his name anytime soon, but a name change--and a reminder to spell people's names correctly--may be in order after being mistaken for a terrorist.
If Minissian (the attacker) was motivated by the incel movement, then we just witnessed the most stupid act of terrorism to ever take place. Unlike the wage gap, pink tax, and existence of trans women, incels are honestly misogynistic and think women are just walking vaginas who can occasionally make food. Don't believe me? See it for yourself.
These users noted that women are "incapable of having personalities" and "being Chad's fuck toys". Seeing that incels base their worth and everyone else's off of how much sex they have, it would make sense that their inferiority complex would transfer over into the hatred and devaluing of women. This is seen in today's "social justice" which is one big middle finger to any kind of social norms. Likewise, the incel movement is a big middle finger to any kind of feminism and female empowerment, not just the creepy vagina cult kind.
Of course, the media is freaking out about incels now...but the question is: do they have a good reason to do it?Considering that incels have advocated for raping women (which is how they got banned from Reddit in the first place), they straddle the line between cringey and outright sinister. It won't be long before they have to move to the cesspool that is a deep web. In the meantime, know that these guys were just men's rights activists (MRAs)* or basement dweller Internet trolls only days before the attack. Lumping every incel together because of what crazy one did would be stupid because it would add fuel to their fire.
At the end of the day, some people will do heinous things in the name of stupid causes. This cause happened to be the idea that people are entitled to sex, which has me scratching my head.
*MRAs focus on male-specific issues like higher suicide rates in men, male rape and DV victims, and men's reproductive rights. Incels only care that "everyone else" but them is having sex.
