The Necessity of a Screen Free Day

in humor •  7 years ago  (edited)

I'll be honest with you. I like screens. Well, one in particular. My Blackphone 2 by Silent Circle, which is what I'm using right now to create this post. I spend much of my time on it as I don't have a computer. Not only do I like screens for myself, I must confess I like when my children have them too. Screens are really useful for taking a shower, cooking, cleaning, and really for any other activity I want to enjoy uninterrupted.

I admire people who live a screen free life, but they are a necessary evil in our home. My peace and well being are important and if mom's not doing well, nobody's doing well. I know too much is bad for them, and lately they've been playing on screens altogether too much... especially since my son got a Nintendo Switch for his birthday.

Early this morning, I decided to commence a day without screens, the reason being that my two year old was chasing my eight year old around, trying to bite her in order to get the smartphone she wanted. Yeah, that happened.

My children are willing to bite and maim each other to get access to their favorite electronics!! They are turning into regular cannibals!! What have we become as a family?!? 😱

When I made my announcement, there was screaming and crying and gnashing of teeth, but after a while they settled down.

They fought.

They played charades.

I heard the word "mom" 859 times.

I didn't take a shower until 2:30pm.

We made this strange creation with one of our pumpkins.

At first Jared wanted to use a blowtorch (since we don't have a heat gun, and the blow-dryer wasn't hot enough).

Then the blowtorch caught on fire, and three of the kids ran outside. (No picture of that! Darn!!)

So he used a candle instead, and we helped peel the crayons.

Then when we were done, Jared sang a song about pumpkins being his friends. I think he inhaled too many crayon fumes. 😂

We went through 70 sheets of paper for drawing and painting.

Naomi and dad played chess.

We gave Naomi an all natural remedy called bach for her temper while playing chess. It didn't really work.

We had leftover spaghetti for breakfast, and bacon and eggs for lunch.

I didn't get much cleaning done.

They played hide-and-seek.

We carved another pumpkin, a Minecraft one.

They were very loud, and they made a big mess.

In fact, they are quite feral!!

But overall, today was a great day, and remarkably, my sanity remains intact!!

Today was necessary, and we decided every Saturday will be a screen free day.

Much love, snowpea ❤😘🙂

Man that sounds familiar. Electronics have affected our child’s desire to eat, get enough sleep, or do anything other than stare at his ipod. He’s gotten up at 3 am many times to play on it and he’s a mess the rest of the day.

Take it away for an hour and the crying and screaming commence. About a week ago he dropped the iPod in the toilet and honestly I think that might be a blessing in disguise. He still has tv but he’s not constantly glued to it like he was his iPod.

I myself spend too much screen time as well. My job requires it—often 50 hours a week in front of my computer. Then I get home and have banking and social media and texts and emails to deal with. It’s jut too much.

I might try a screen free day next time I get a day off work. Honestly the more time I spend staring at a computer or a phone the less human I feel. Ugh.

Very nice post.

I think your experience with your child is very common. It just goes along with living in this modern age...sounds like my son...looking back to the time his grandparents told me they were getting him a tablet for Christmas, I kind of wish I would've put my foot down then and said, "No, get him something else, Lego sets, books, not a tablet. Because now it consumes his mind so much that even when he doesn't have it he's thinking about it. Once we didn't notice he had it in bed and he literally took that as an opportunity to stay up all night with it. We found that very troubling! Give a screen free day a try! It might annoy the hell out of everyone in some ways but there will be benefits I promise!! :)

I’ve had your article saved in my to read folder for two days now. I laughed when I saw the quote at the top and had to check you out.

You are inspiring. I may just create a screen free day! As soon as I find the energy. Lol.

Thank you!! :) Yes, don't do a screen free day unless you can handle everything that comes along with it. It can be quite challenging!! :)

For sure! 😉

We do screen free days periodically as well. We will usually pull out a board game to play. If I am on my phone too much, it almost drains all my energy and makes me feel like not doing anything at all.

I know the feeling, when I'm on my phone too much I don't get enough done either. Sometimes I'm just as bad as the kids. Which reminds me...after this comment I have to pull away from this device and catch up on the laundry haha! ;)

Love the honest, funny retelling. Way to persevere! I struggle the same way at times. One day a week is a good challenge, and I think the kids will look forward to it :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it!! I think they'll look forward to it too! :)

That's awesome. I tried to keep my son from watching too much video but it is so hard when the alternative is you have to put in 100% effort to keep him entertained when you just want to rest after a long week. I wonder if it is easier if you have multiple kids and they can entertain themselves?

Not necessarily. I my experience they just like to swamp me all at once. :)
