Why are we so hungry in the afternoon? It's stress's fault

If you feel that in the afternoon you feel like taking a sweet or chopping anything greasy, you're not the only one. It's a more common sensation than you might think. And now, a study by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has discovered the cause. All this is due to the fact that in the afternoon, the accumulated stress levels during the day cause an increase in the production of the hormone responsible for the sensation of appetite, and a decrease in the relationship with the sensation of satisfaction.

The researchers conducted an experiment with a group of volunteers, some of whom had an eating disorder that forced them to eat compulsively. All of them were subjected to a stressful experience in the morning and another one in the afternoon. Blood samples were taken to measure their hormone levels.

And what they observed is that the levels of ghrelin, the hormone linked to the sensation of appetite, increased in both cases, but that increase was considerably greater in the afternoon hours. In both cases, after the stress test, volunteers were offered a menu consisting of pizza, chips and chocolate cookies. And while in the morning only those suffering from an eating disorder ate, in the afternoon everyone did so.
