Last Minute Sandbag Options - Hefty Force-Flex + Kitty Litter or Pet Food

in hurricane •  8 years ago

For those times when the storm takes the worst possible turn, and your city has already been out of sandbags for most of a week...dog food or kitty litter in a hefty bag!

The dog food/kitty litter container is often already mostly water proof. Double-layer force flex bags, which you can double up on, add an extra layer of defense. These will shape to any space easier than sandbags will, and the pieces are too small to become meaningful projectiles outside of truly awful luck.

My grocery store still had plenty of supplies, including lots of dog food. Oddly enough, they were completely cleaned out of Gatorade, but still had Powerade in a wide variety of flavors right next to it. Every soup was gone unless it started with "Cream Of" or "New England".

Don't get me wrong, I prefer Gatorade to Powerade like the next red-blooded American, but there are times when brand loyalty is not of paramount importance. (Those times are always, but especially now.)

If you prefer a more serious sign-off, we'll go with this one:

Special Thanks: Glad, for a fine trash bag. Purina One, for not being sold out and using water-resistant packaging.

Probably a smart idea since it also absorbs water and probably expands in doing so, plugging the whole thing up even further?
What about just building something like a dirt wall/dyke with whatever the ground is made of? Or filling big bags with those? If you can find sturdy bags that is.. Maybe multiple trash bags.

Hope the storm drama doesn't cause too much trouble for you

These are also good options I may be pursuing if things start to get out of hand. One problem I have here is there are a lot of "rock" lawns instead of dirt lawns.

I think I'll be OK. This property is topographically sound.

Oh, thank god. From what I can tell from television and the news, it is pretty damn bad.
Living in the Netherlands, we are several meters below sea level, but scenes like I am seeing on tv are completely unknown here (except for about 80 years ago when a big flood had the government build mega dykes). After Katrina a while ago, one would think drastic measures would've been taken by now. Sad to see such destruction...even if it's just minor flooding, that's so destructive to the entire house.. way beyond cleaning up wet floors..

I get the sense that "ya'll" are much better at the construction of levees and dykes than we are here in the states.

Unfortunately, this flooding generally comes from storm surge, or the storm pushing a big bubble of water onto the beach.

Cool option, come up with anything if things get dire enough and its good to have that smarts to be able to innovate to protect and maybe even save your life and others. Stay safe everyone during Irma

Thank you! I am still optimistic things won't be too bad.

Nice bike! I am worried about ya though! How far are you from Miami Beach?

I'm just a couple miles from the beach in the Tampa area, regionally.

I may need to move the bike up a couple steps to higher ground if things get hairy...

I am concerned... Any chance you & doggy can hop on bike & go? Keep us updated if you can!

Hah, I think not. I actually have 4 dogs and the other 3 are all about 80 lbs...

Hope you guys will be okay! You riding it out?

Yep, but it missed us almost completely! Lost my fence though.

Awesome! Good to hear you're unscathed. Sorry about your fence though!

Ah, no problem. It definitely had it coming.

This is a great option to block doors and whatnot...a tad expensive if you need many many bags, though. I have a few slim bags of crushed asphalt that people throw in the bed of their trucks for traction in the winter that i could put in a plastic bag of I ever needed it, though...just as another option.

Anyway, best of luck to you. Hopefully it will weaken a bit by the time it reaches you!!!

"a tad expensive"

That's true. The kitty litter, in particular, is surprisingly expensive. However, it does have the merit of being highly absorbent by design.

This is actually the main reason I used dog food. At least that way, I'd have a big supply of (hopefully dry) dog food afterwards that I could seal up in bins and use.

(I no longer have any cats.)

"crushed asphalt "

You'd need some beefy plastic to hold that weight!

Perhaps, but the asphalt comes in convenient plastic mesh tubular bags and are easily transportable. I think you'd just have to tape a plastic bag around them and call it good. I'd just be afraid of water ruining anything i put inside it. But if you're just going to consume the dog food anyway...

"But if you're just going to consume the dog food anyway..."

Only if things get awfully bad. ;)

Lol...I meant "consume" as "use", like for your dogs. Things would have to be REALLY bad to actually eat it!

I thought so, I was just being a pita!
