Why isn't Trump being charged for more serious things?

When it comes to the NY charges against Trump, I largely agree with former Trump lawyer Ty Cobb (not to be confused with the legendary baseball Hall of Famer of the same name):

“I think the Bragg case is the water pistol unnecessarily preceding the missile-launching F-35 attack piloted by Jack Smith with Merrick Garland as his wingman.”

It's not impossible that the prosecutor can prevail here. But his theory of the case is legally questionable and the underlying offense is pretty minor, especially compared to the genuinely awful things Trump has done. It isn't like getting Al Capone for tax evasion. It's more like getting Capone for speeding a few miles over the limit in an area where the speed limit is unclear. And it's certainly reasonable to suspect these charges would not have been brought if the suspect were an ordinary Joe.

The other likely charges against Trump are far stronger legally, and they relate to genuinely great evil on Trump's part (e.g. - attempting to stay in power despite having lost an election). I hope and expect he will go down for that. In an ideal world, he would also deserve to spend many years in prison for the brutal (and illegal) family separation policy. Sadly, various unjust immunity doctrines preclude that.
