This is a little article on a commission I had last week.
I was asked to make the notices for a rural hotel that has 8 rooms and each has a name of a local herb or plant.
I was given the old hand carved slates of woods that had been taken out of the house when they renovated the roofs.
The wood these roofs were made of is a well appreciated strong tree we call Savina. They are slow growing and create a wood that is never eaten by mites.
This is an image of the Savina tree. It´s in the family of juniper trees.
And this is the image of a typical roof.
Anyway, so I was given these woods to clean up , sand down a bit and then turn them into notices to hang on the doors.
Stage one...raw...
Stage two... sanding them down to healthy wood...
sanded.
Then varnished , ready to work on.
