Gígjukvísl

Gígjukvísl, the glacial river originating from the outlet glacial tongue Skeiðarárjökull in South Iceland.

Iceland‘s Ring Road (Hringvegur), seen in the third image, runs through the sand desert of Skeiðarársandur. Not long ago this stretch of volcanic sand posed an insurmountable obstacle to accessing the eastern half of Iceland from the south coast. For there remains the ever present threat of a glacial flood (jökulhlaup) sweeping away roads, bridges and everything else in its way.
