Hornstrandir – Midnight in Aðalvík

Sunset in the High North.

Inauguration of a new series on Hornstrandir. The first instalment features Aðalvík bay photographed from the helicopter.

The far-flung Hornstrandir peninsula in the Westfjords of Iceland lies just below the Arctic Circle. One of the last great wilderness on the planet, it is now a protected area. Despite the divine benisons of raw Nature, life here was far from idyllic. Its farms lie abandoned today, the last inhabitants having moved out of the region in 1954. Their descendants retain access to the ancient land and convene here during the summer.

Visiting Hornstrandir requires advance planning. The brief window for enjoying the wonders of this isolation usually runs from late June to mid-August. Winter access is possible but only to the determined and well-equipped.

The extraordinary experience of the midnight sun at Hornstrandir will remain one of the highlights of my life.
