As you may have heard, this summer the Minister of Environment of Armenia Eric Grigoryan announced that the country will gradually outlaw the use of disposable plasticware. The Minister has also noted that this is a global trend, saying “in time, Armenia will join the ranks of countries where using disposable plasticware is forbidden.”

An interesting “green campaign” was launched by Empower – a Norwegian project: every kilo of plastic waste can be exchanged for 1 EMP token equal to one US dollar. In order to claim the reward plastic waste must be delivered to one of special drop-off stations. In this scenario, blockchain technology ensures the deal is transparent, says the project website. Empower backs its tokens with its own resources, funds and charity. EMP holders can use the coins within the Empower ecosystem or sell it for local currencies.

This is how blockchain and a reward system can unexpectedly turn out to yield financial benefit and help the environment!

However, this project is not the only one to utilize blockchain for the sake of the environment. Thus The Earth Dollar project will give its tokens for realizing such initiatives as cleaning rivers, planting trees, protecting the environment from pollution. Carbon Coin wants to use blockchain to reward all farmers globally for their sensible and caring attitude towards the planet. While the Earth Token will give out special tokens saving and developing woodlands.

As we can see new technologies can give a helping hand to not only people of the Earth, but the planet itself.
