It's just the market - supply and demand. What a lot of people don't realize is that the increasingly scarce commodity here is not the content being provided, but YOUR ATTENTION - that is, the amount of time being dedicated to absorbing the content. There is only so much time in the day, and you chose how to spend it. This is just the industry recognizing and commodifying this, and then creating a space in which competition for it can happen.
