Environmental sustainability has long been a problem that sociologists have been trying to crack. Resolving this comes down to three main issues strongly connected to each other:

1. fossil fuel depletion,
2. climate change due to carbon dioxide emissions, and
3. the increasing costs of energy and water.

With our future teetering on this balance, the race is on to come to an answer that will halt damage to our planet and drive the plan to recovery.

Since the industrial revolution, the world’s nations have been founded on access to fossil fuel energy. Yet demand for them continues to increase: nations such as China and India, having become more industrialized, have sent the global demand and price of fossil fuels rocketing, as well global emissions of carbon dioxide.

This increases the burden on economies all over the world, and at the end of that never-ending chain of costs is the average homeowner, whose utility bills continue to soar. In fact, out of what we usually pay for our electricity, only a mere 30% accounts for the actual costs of the energy we consume. This is a perfect example of where the three famed pillars of sustainability come in: environmental, economic and social, and how one inevitably influences the other—if any of these pillars is weak, the system in its whole is not sustainable.

When all three of these pillars are stable and strong, people live in a system where a high quality of life is the norm. They have a clean healthy environment, a satisfactory level of economic well-being, and a robust level of social fulfillment.
