What is the meaning of this new icon (eyecon) in Steemit?

in icon •  8 years ago  (edited)

Can anybody tell me the meaning of this new icon (or eye-con) at the bottom of any article posted on Steemit as well as the meaning of the number next to it? I have been carrying out a search on the Steemit platform, but I can't find any reference to it.

Some people say it is a view counter, but that does not make sense. In the example below, there were 4 genuine replies of people who must have looked at the post. Yet the "view" counter only indicated 1! So it must mean something else:

Why is everybody replying to my post so sure it is a view counter? If it was announced, I am curious to read that announcement.

Replies, views and votes don't match:

Votes often do not involve a view, as most votes are by bots. I have checked that in Steemd.com. If you have a lot of votes, often the vast majority was made at exactly the same moment, showing that it was a voting bot programmed to react at the value attribution by a whale.

Although I applaud the initiative for a view counter that shows the number of "real views" (as opposed to votes, which do not necessarily involve a view), it seems this is not it. Or is it?

Thanks for your help and upvote if you were wondering about the same ;)

Maybe.. view count from outside.
maybe...

That could be.

It's a view counter, but I haven't learned it's parameters, yet.

That might be an old post, meaning one view after the new feature was implemented

Could be. But how is everybody replying to my post so sure it is a view counter? If it was announced, I am curious to read that announcement.

I haven't see any latest announcement, but a few weeks ago there was a promise to introduce this feature soon, also I don't remember the exact link.

Thanks for your contribution anyway.

Thanks Svamiva. So it is a view counter after all... strange. I am surprised there is no explanation whatsoever in that announcement, nor how you can customise your profile...

I think this is the most likely answer - after all, those who replied must be included in the group that viewed. The number of views should always match or exceed the number of replies...

Right, I haven't figured out how they account for the views, obviously the replies and views don't match.
Votes don't credit a view, either.

It's how many times your post has been viewed.

I was also confused about that.. Maybe it a number of Repeatation in your post.

Reputation of the post? or repetition... of what?

I think they are the views that people actually looked at, and the votes aren't always made because they viewed your post. Sometimes people just skim the headlines and upvote. Sometimes they have a bot that automatically upvotes. So, they won't match.

I just saw a post that had supposedly one view, yet it had already 8 votes after only seconds...
This is why I started looking for what the eye symbol means.

I am wondering as well. Could it be views by witnesses?
