The ten commandments given by the prophet Moses in the desert of the Sinai begin with the prohibition of idolatry, there is only one living God, an immaterial, eternal, and wise God, the God of Abraham, Jacob, and Moses: "And God spoke all these words: ´I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me´" Exodus 20:1-3.
The sin of idolatry was a sin that stalk the people of Israel throughout history. When the people of Israel took possession of the promised land, the conquered nations practiced divination, astrology, and magic, esoteric practices that were never completely eradicated. In fact, the Bible tells us how King Saul went to consult a seer in Endor because the Lord did not communicate with him through prophets or visions (1 Samuel 28:1-25).
Then with King Solomon began a custom that was continued for both the kings of Judah and Israel, to marry foreign princesses who brought the cult of the Baals, and the most affected by this was the Northern Kingdom of Israel, which was the first to fall with the assyrian invasion.
Also, all the prophets had to face idolatry, and an example were Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who for their devotion to God and for their refusal to worship a statue built by King Nebuchadnezzar; according to the book of Daniel in the Bible, were thrown into a fiery furnace (Daniel 3:1-30).
Psalm 135 is a reminder that false Gods are not to be worshiped: "I know that the LORD is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods" Psalm 135:5.
Because in the practice of idolatry the Psalmist taught us there is only deceit, ignorance, lies, and destruction:
"The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
made by human hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see.
They have ears, but cannot hear,
nor is there breath in their mouths.
Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them" Psalm 135:15-18.
