Idolatry is a sin: They were as stubborn as their ancestors who had refused to believe in the LORD their God

The Sacred Scriptures tell us how the Lord severely punished the idolatry of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. After the division of the kingdom in two after the death of Solomon, only Judah remained faithful to the Lord. The inhabitants of the Northern Kingdom did what did not please God and turned their backs on all the regulations that came from the old covenant: "Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13.
And as a consequence of this abandonment, problems were not long in coming, the Assyrian empire set its sights on the Kingdom of Israel and the protection from above was not present, idolatry is a grave sin, because it breaks the bond with God.
Shalmaneser invaded the Kingdom of Israel, conquered it and deported all its inhabitants, as a consequence, the King of Assyria brought other peoples to inhabit the region and thus the Samaritans were born. Only the pact with David remained firm thanks to several kings of Judah who remained faithful.
This is how the Bible reflects on what happened to the people of Israel:
"The LORD warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: ´Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.´
But the Israelites would not listen. They were as stubborn as their ancestors who had refused to believe in the LORD their God. They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the LORD had ordered them, ´Do not do as they do´" 2 Kings 17:13-15.
