Anxiety remedies that work part 2: Skullcap

in ihaveanxietytoo •  6 years ago  (edited)

This is a natural anxiolytic herb of the mint family, native to the New World, the latin name is "Scutellaria laterifolia". I have not tried it myself so normally I would not write about it, but yesterday after posting my post Anxiety remedies that work part 1: Lavendel I saw that @mountainjewel had a similar idea about making a series on anti-anxiety herbs.

Initially I thought, hmm thats a bit odd... Similar idea on natural anxiolytics, posted right after I posted mine... But then I read her post:
#ihaveanxietytoo Challenge & Skullcap for Herbal Anxiety Support Share a Natural Remedy

@mountainjewel is actually a full-blown herbalist who makes her own tinctures and everything and her post on Scullcap was very detailed and most impressive! She is proposing that we use a hashtag #ihaveanxietytoo for these types of posts, and I loved that idea since I am a bit lost in the world of "tags" here on steemit.

Remember we are all in this battle against anxiety together!

Im going to let @mountainjewel "speak" here and link back to her article:

For me, I feel the effects of skullcap nearly immediately. It has a gentle (which I prefer) connection with the nervous system, that at-times flighty bird that can beat your heart out of your chest. I find skullcap alleviates my physical symptoms of anxiety by calming me and reminding me to breathe (much like I experienced a CBD oil I tried recently) and at this point, I can be more aware of the experience of anxiety and not so caught up in it. Herbal supports are just that- supports- and not the answer. You are the answer and these are our allies in supporting us to touch base with ourselves.

When I am in an agitated state or just want to calm down, a couple dropperfulls of skullcap tincture works like a charm.

In fact, this "anxiolytic activity" (fancy for anti-anxiety) is demonstrated through this study: Phytochemical and biological analysis of skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora L.): a medicinal plant with anxiolytic properties

These compounds may play a role in anxiolytic activity since baicalin and baicalein are known to bind to the benzodiazepine site of the GABAA receptor and since GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter.

Skullcap literally makes your brain less anxious!

I find this very interesting, this could potentially mean that "Skullcap" could be as efficient as a prescribed anxiolytic, since I have not yet had the pleasure to experiment with "Skullcap", I can not really make a statement, but I will order some seeds and try to plant them next spring. Thank you @mountainjewel for sharing your wisdom, and if you want to read her whole article, (Its great with video and loads of pictures), please check it out here:

I can't rate this herb since I never tried it but maybe @mountainjewel can, how many stars would you give Skullcap?
@mountainjewel -"I give skullcap a 5 for its use!"

But not when I got the right remedies!
So cure yourself and don't negotiate with anxiety!

And make sure you read up on your herbs before ingestion!
(This is from the FDA on Skullcap-tincture overdose):

According to the FDA, an overdose of the tincture causes giddiness, stupor, confusion, twitching of the limbs, intermission of the pulse, and other symptoms indicative of epilepsy. 11 Exceptionally large doses have resulted in seizure-like movements. Source.

WARNING! Whilst browsing through pixabay, for an image of Skullcap I found this image below:
moonkshood.jpg

This image was tagged as Scullcap, but its really: Monkshood also called: wolf's bane, leopard's bane, mousebane, women's bane, devil's helmet, queen of poisons, or blue rocket... Yeah you get the picture, its dangerous, so if wildcrafting don't relay on pictures from the internet, just get a good field-guide, and go with someone who is knowledgeable.

Peace, Happiness, Love and Abundance to all steemians!

Really interesting I'm going to have to check it out. I wonder if it is available in Germany...

Hello @balticbadger!!! Nice to see you again, i really appreciate your dedication!
Not sure if you can find "Skullcap" in Europe, its native to the "New World",
maybe try the "Botanical Garden"? He he...

But watch out for "Monkshood", I am pretty sure that one is fairly common in Europe...
Names like: Wolf's bane, Devil's helmet etc, sounds very medieval and European...

Cheers!

No problem! I enjoy your blog! Dang that stinks they have all the good stuff in the states lol. Thanks for the heads up!

Hey great advice my friend. I have a lot of friends that deal with anxiety. I think artists get it as a deal package for being an artist. That said, eat right, exercise, breath right, set boundries and be merry! :D Herbs can be a great relaxant. I also found music soothes the soul, personally. And now I just got this ATV, so I go ride it around to relieve stress now. It's awesome!

Nice one, thanks for the encouragement @artopium, I read your message and got myself out for a nice walk, it helped, breathing... Yeah, BOUNDARIES yes, I struggle with establishing them properly in personal relations but I am learning... Herbs, yes I am "beta-testing" a new herb for my next article, it works, but it makes me very sleepy, so not sure if it is more of a sleep-aid then a "chillpill"...

Cool an ATV I never tried one of those, just be a bit careful!
I heard Ozzy Osbourn broke his neck on one of those (and survived)... Found this pretty funny article of 9 things that should have killed Ozzy, he had a lot of anxiety I believe, and it drove him crazy, but he is still alive, so he must have done something right... =)

I think people need to know that there are cures for anxiety out there, so many people are suffering, and they don't get any good help... Do you use any supplements or herbs at all?
/FF

I once took an all natural antidepressant for a whole month on accident. Lol

great write up and thanks for the referral! i'm glad this information is getting out there :) thanks for using the #ihaveanxietytagtoo and for posting with #naturalmedicine!

Thanks for the reply @mountainjewel and thanks for letting me use your statement on Skullcap.
But from now on I am only going to post "natural remedies" that I tried myself, he he, I almost posted "wolf's bane" as a cover picture for gods sake! Thanks pixabay, (Im going to send them a message)...

Good thing I double-check almost everything... ;) Anyway first-hand knowledge is always the best for these type of "review like" blogposts... I will use the "tags" in the next posts in this serie...

Bless!

/FF

P.S. How many stars would you give Skullcap??? (1-5)...??? D.S. 😀

haha oh my! yeah i saw you had the caveat for the Monk's hood lookalike- that's a good idea to share the dangerous lookalikes. i, too, try to only write about what i have experience with! that's a good rule of thumb :) glad to hear you'll use the tags! i give skullcap a 5 for its use! look forward to seeing your next post in this series.

Oh, cool...As I said when you search for pictures on pixabay for "Skullcap" you get pictures of Monkshood...
Always good with some words of caution... Cant be too careful...

Five stars, then it must be really amazing! I can't wait to try some!
There will be more posts coming soon in that series...
=)
Hugs and happiness!

Thank you my friend, part 3 is coming soon, after some extensive self-experimentation and procrastination...

Thanks for your comments they are appreciated!!!

/FF

@friendly-fenix sounds awesome and fun!

Just dropping a comment for now. I want to remember to come back and investigate both posts later.
Since I work with herbs and also do battle with anxiety these should be right up my ally.
Sadly I am running a bit behind on everything this week. Gone to catch up on things before that starts causing too much anxiety. 👀

@headchange
Good idea! Come back when you have finished all your important tasks.
And I will have posted more "natural anxiety remedies"... =)
/FF

You do that. I will slow up enough to read eventually. I think I have jumped from one topic to another a bit too much this week. Now my brain is scrambled and I am not keeping up with any of them.

I can feel a bit like that sometimes!
