Being an astronaut can indeed provide an amazing experience because it can see directly the solar system. In addition, astronauts can also feel how the situation in space. Yet to become an astronaut of course there are conditions that must be met.
Sourced from Tech Times, to become an astronaut at NASA is a minimum person must have a bachelor's degree from a well-accredited institution. In addition, the elected candidate must also come from majoring in mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering or biology.
Another special requirement is having a minimum of three years or 1,000 hours of flying into a jet pilot. Candidates must also follow the physical selection held by NASA.
Although there is no age-specific limit in the NASA astronaut candidate program, but the recruitment that has been held is known to choose candidates in the age range 26, 46, and 34 years.
Another thing that must also be met is the question of citizenship. Candidates to be accepted by NASA are US citizens. However, NASA also has international agreements with certain countries such as Japan, Brazil, Canada, Russia and the European Space Agency (ESA).
In addition to the applicant's level of requirements, NASA also has a series of other tests such as interviews, medical examinations, and a one-week orientation period. NASA will also examine each candidate's background to get the best astronaut.
The job vacancy that will be given not only limited to astronauts. Candidates can also work as an employee at the International Space Station, exploration in space, and commercial testing and transportation into space.
Competition to become elected candidates is increasingly difficult. This year alone, there have been more than 18,000 applicants who follow NASA's astronaut program selection. The number exceeds the record in 1978 and the most throughout the year 2000. The amount is threefold at the 2012 opening.
Of the 18 thousands applicants from different countries, NASA chose only 12 of the best of them consisting of seven men and five women. The US space agency has just announced the 12 elected candidates with Vice President Mike Pence on June 7, 2017.
The selected candidates will have the duty to report their obligations to Johnson Space Center in August after receiving certain missions from NASA including conducting research at the International Space Station, launching the spacecraft, and possibly continuing the Orion mission.
"We're going to keep them busy - they're important crews important to the NASA family and the human team from the spacecraft," said NASA Administrator Robert Lightfood. However, the number of candidates selected by NASA depends on the crew's needs at the time. This year is called the number of candidates ever elected by NASA.
