If you are young you may not realize how much to the right the immigration discourse of the last decade is relative to prior decades. Ironically so as the American public has become generally more pro-immigration compared to what it was like in the 80s and 90s.
Democrats aren't even just ceding ground on border enforcement, but on asylum law and amnesty. It is a terrible assault not just on illegal immigration, but on legal immigration.
