The prophet Baruch: But each of us has followed the inclinations of our wicked hearts, served other gods, and done evil

The Book of Baruch is a short text that this prophet wrote in Babylon during exile and sent to a priest in Jerusalem. The prophet began his book by pointing out a constant teaching in the Bible, when people lose the fear of God is when problems begin. The fear of God is the gift that makes us tolerant with our neighbor and docile to the word of God, the fear of God is the aversion to sin. The man who fears God when he sees sin, says to himself in his heart: I cannot follow that way.
The prophet Baruch in his letter recognized the problems of Israel, the people due to the hardness of their hearts had forgotten the Law of the Lord: "We have sinned in the LORD's sight and disobeyed him. We have not listened to the voice of the LORD, our God, so as to follow the precepts the LORD set before us" Baruch 1:17-18.
And the word that God sent through the prophets as a warning was not heard either: "For we did not listen to the voice of the LORD, our God, in all the words of the prophets he sent us, but each of us has followed the inclinations of our wicked hearts, served other gods, and done evil in the sight of the LORD, our God" Baruch 1:21-22.
That is why the prophet ended his book by explaining that the nation of Israel had to return to its source, to that eternal and perfect wisdom that comes from and is linked to the fulfillment of the law of Moses: "You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom" Baruch 3:12. Because there is no greater wisdom than this: "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" Deuteronomy 6:5.
For the prophet, the return to that original wisdom was the only thing that could change the facts because the purpose of wisdom is to care for the life and prosperity of men, the wisdom is the perfection and the culmination of the fear of God: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" Proverbs 1:7.
