INDIAN CLOTH
MERCHANTS, C1875
These merchants in 19th-century Madras are
presenting their wares. Now known as Chennai,
the city is also home to a handwoven, typically
plaid fabric that bears its name. Traditionally
associated with Indian peasants, the cloth became
a status symbol in 1930s America as only the rich
could aford it during the Great Depression
