India's Prime Minister Modi has come out to state India will launch its first manned mission to space in 2022. His remarks were made has part of his Independence Day speech.
India has been working on toward the goal of manned spaceflight for some time, and recently tested its crew escape rockets for its indigenously developed crew capsule:
This was a crucial step for a crewed flight. One that has been done recently for the American Orion, Starliner and Dragon V2 capsules.
Once India has placed their own astronauts into space, they will be the fourth spacefaring nation after Russia, America and China. There are other nations who have astronaut (or their name for it) corps, but no others have or will have an independent manned spaceflight capability soon. India will be one of a very exclusive club.
