Dipawali Day 1: Dhanvantari Jayanti

Indian's biggest festival Dipawali starts today. Dipawali is a 5 days long festival and day 1st is celebrated as Dhanvantari Jayanti birthday of God Dhanvantri, Dhavantri is the Hindu god of medicine(Ayurveda) .
Dhanvantri Jayanti(Birthday of God Dhanvantri) is celebrated by the practitioners of Ayurveda on Dhanteras, two days before Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. It is also celebrated as National Ayurveda Day in India.
Today at home we celebrated this day by worshiping Dhanvantri as my wife is a practitioner of Ayurveda.

This day also celebrated as Dhanteras also known as Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi. Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar month of Karthik.
It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi(Goddess of wealth) came out from the ocean during the churning of the Sea. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped on the day of Trayodashi.
Dhanteras is important for Hindu households because on this auspicious day of Dhanteras, Hindus are supposed to buy new utensils, gold and/or silver. This is done because it is said that goddess Lakshmi then showers households with more of this kind of wealth.
