Ratan Tata is a renowned Indian businessman and service-free chairman of Tata Sons. He was the President of Tata Group from 1991 to 2012. He left the post of Tata Group on 28 December 2012, but he is still the chairman of the Charity Trust of the Tata Group. He was also the chairman of Tata Group's all major companies like Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Tea, Tata Chemicals, Indian Hotels and Tata Teleservices. Under his leadership, the Tata Group touched new heights and the group's revenue also increased manifold.

Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937 in Surat, India. Ratan Tata Naval is the son of Tata, who was adopted by Navjibai Tata after the death of his husband Ratan Tata. When Ratan was ten years old and his younger brother, Jimmy, his parents (Naval and Sonu) separated from each other in the mid-1940s, only seven years later. After that both the brothers were raised by his grandmother Navjibai Tata. Ratan Tata also has a step brother named Noel Tata.
Rattan's primary education was from the campion school of Mumbai and from Secondary Education Cathedral and John Conan School. After this, he completed his BS in Architecture with Structural Engineering from Cornell University in 1962. After that he completed the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in 1975.

Before returning to India, Ratan worked for some time in Jones and Emmons in Los Angeles, California. He started his career with the Tata Group in 1961. In the early days, he worked on Tata Steel's shop floor. After this he joined the Tata Group and the companies. In 1971, he was appointed the charge director in the National Radio and Electronics Company (NELCO). In 1981, he was made the Chairman of Tata Industries. In 1991, JRD Tata quit the post of the group and made Ratan Tata his successor.
Under the leadership of Ratan, the Tata Group touched the new heights. Under his leadership, Tata Consultancy Services issued a public issue and Tata Motors was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1998, Tata Motors introduced the first fully Indian passenger car - Tata Indica. After that, Tata Tea Tetley, Tata Motors acquired 'Jaguar Land Rover' and Tata Steel 'Chorus', thereby increasing the credibility of the Tata Group in the Indian industry. Tata Nano - The world's cheapest passenger car - is also the result of Ratan Tata's own thinking.
On December 28, 2012, he retired from all executive responsibility of the Tata Group. He was replaced by Cyrus Mistry, 44. Although Tata has retired, he is still engaged in work-related work. Recently, he has made his personal investment in India's e-commerce company Snapdeal. Along with this, he has also invested in another e-commerce company Urban Ladder and Chinese mobile company Geoomi.
At present Ratan is the retired chairman of the Tata Group. Along with this, he is also the chairman of Tata Sons' 2 Trusts.
Ratan Tata has also played an important role in India as well as in many other organizations in other countries. He is a member of the Prime Minister's Trade and Industry Council and National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council. Rattan is also a director on the board of several companies.
Honours and awards
The Government of India honored Ratan Tata with Padma Bhushan (2000) and Padma Vibhushan (2008). These honors are the third and second highest civilian honor of the country. Other notable rewards he received are:
