Mumbai, April, 4: The Mumbai University failed to feature in the list of top 100 universities in centre’s overall ranking of universities. it is ranked between 151 to 200. The ranking were divided into five categories: collages, universities, pharmacy, engineering, management and overall. Union human resources development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
The NIRF was launched in September 2015, while the first NIRF ranking list was released in April 2016. This is the second NIRF list released by the government. The ranking are evaluated on the basis of teaching, learning resources, research work, graduation outcome, outreach, inclusivity and perception of any university.
Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) retain its position by stabling on the top of the list. Indian Institute of Technology- Madras entered the list and garbed the second position, while Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay (IIT-B) bagged the third spot in the list.
“This is excellent news. It is very encouraging and rewarding to the staff and students of the institute,” said Devang Khakkar, director of IIT-B. Top institutes will receive certificates from the President in Delhi next week, quoted by Hindustan Times.
Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai, which was placed at second position among top 100 universities in 2016 list, has been sloped down to 41th, whereas the Homi Bhabha National Institute slipped from 17th to 35th rank in the list.
If we focus only on Maharashtra state, we have only six institute and university in top fifty, which are: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (3), Savitribai Phule Pune University which is newly entered in the list and grabbed 18th position, Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Pune (29), Homi Bhabha National Institute (35), Institute of Chemical Technology (41), TATA Institute of Social Sciences (49) were IIT-B is the only institute from the city that appears in the top 50 list of the general category.
