Teaching and Research Specialisations/Strengths

The University of Sydney is highly regarded for its research capabilities, with 75% of the university’s academic research fields rated as ‘above world standard’ in the 2012 Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) assessment. The university is a major recipient of research funding, recently receiving over $100 million combined from the ARC and NHMRC. The university hosts 70 research centres, including three ARC Centres of Excellence that undertake research into the fields of Autonomous Systems, All-sky Astrophysics and Optical Systems (CUDOS). A wide range of core research facilities include the Mass Spectrometry Core Facility (MSCF) and Advanced Cytometry Facility (ACF).
The Sydney Law School, the first in Australia, received a rating of 5 stars in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia. Sydney’s Law School’s research is ranked 5th within the top international law schools in the Social Sciences Research Network, with students offered pathways to study at Oxford, Cambridge and leading law schools in Asia, Europe and North America. Sydney Law School’s research strengths include criminal, environmental and international law.
The Arts and Social Sciences faculty ranks among the best arts faculties in the world, ranking in the top 20 in THE World University Rankings by Subject 2013/14. The world-leading faculty offers an extensive range of disciplines led by internationally renowned experts, and offers student exchange programs with over 100 top institutions worldwide including London’s Kings College and China’s Peking University.
The University of Sydney’s Health Sciences faculty is world-class, ranking 23rd in THE World University Rankings by Subject in Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health. The faculty hosts The Charles Perkins Centre, the newly-opened $385 million research complex that accommodates 950 researchers and over 1400 students, with state-of-the-art laboratories, clinical research facilities and advanced collaboration spaces. The centre aims to uncover solutions to significant global health challenges including cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes.
