Groom waits for the bride

Indians customs are very paternal I nature. We Indians have been considering our men to be superior and that shows in our customs and traditions. One of the most famous traditions that most of us know about is the time when the groom enters the wedding venue where the bride is kept waiting. The groom rides a golden chariot or a horse with his relatives dancing to the tune of drums and trumpets. The bride however waits all decked up in red and gold. This custom makes us believe that men, no matter what, can take his own sweet time and the girl has to wait till he decides to make up his mood for marriage.

This tradition is not something that is acceptable in today's time where bride and groom are no less than equals. Today, is the time when both girl and boy earn equally and are educated to the same levels. There is no one superior than the other. This thought crossed the mind of this young bride from Bihar in India. Bihar is among one of those Indian states that has been dealing with many crimes against women.

This young bride had a different plan for her wedding. She popped the idea of role reversal wherein she would lead the wedding processing while her groom would wait for her in the wedding venue. The thought was to propagate the idea of women empowerment and it served the purpose. Many people got talking about this idea and loved it.

The Indian Navy Captain groom had no qualms reversing the roles. The wedding took place as expected.

I personally think this was a good idea. If this is not possible then at least there should be no wedding procession et al. The bride and groom both should be present in the venue and nobody should be made to wait.

If not superiors, treat us at least as equals.
